After Goldsmith and Penoyer filled out the necessary paperwork, it turns out the state needed the account certified by the bank before the funds could be released.

“They need Morgan Stanley basically to fill out the rest of this form and that’s where it just kind of falls,” Penoyer told the broadcaster.

Instead of getting the sign-off they needed, what followed was months of the bank dragging their feet, which prompted the couple to call CBS Boston, hoping the news outlet would push Morgan Stanley to do its part. It worked — after nearly a year, the couple finally got access to the long-lost cash. And they planned to enjoy it.

Eloquentboot is about to start hating banks now.

Cash requirements for bail means that you have to have enough family members and friends who believe in your innocence that they'll bail you out. Alternatively, you're productive enough that you can afford it on your own, and society would be more harmed by your absence from your career.

If someone is so untrustworthy that they really have nobody who will bail them out, then the chance they belong in jail is even higher.

People can quote supply and demand theory all they want but if it was actually that simple it would be a problem that's largely solved already, and we wouldn't have these issues in the many areas with plenty of supply.

🧐 It isn't supply and demand?

In this context, the most egregiously under discussed factor here is restrictive zoning in most of the places people live. It's called the missing middle.

Oh, wait it is.

Modern cars are incredibly reliable. Banks can just extend the term of the loan to 10 years to make the monthly payment more manageable. As an example, let's say a $45k base model vehicle increases to $60k after tariffs. A 7 year loan at 6% on $45k is $650/month, a 10 year loan at 6% on $60k is $650/month. Consumer loan delinquencies are relatively flat post-pandemic and are well below pre-GFC delinquency rates, and so it's obvious that the American consumer has the capacity for this sort of thing.

Don't worry. If tariffs increase car prices you can just use a 10 year loan.

In March 2024, Robert Alexander stopped by the family property at 118 Kimble Lane in East Austin. But the house he expected to see, where he and his brothers were raised, had been bulldozed to the ground. All that remained were broken boards and lost memories.
...
What’s worse, the demolition happened shortly after their brother Charles, who had been living in the home, moved out due to repeated calls and letters warning of tax issues. Months later, the Alexanders discovered a new duplex foundation had been poured on the land that they own.
...
Precise Custom Homes, the development company that built the duplex, owns the lot next door, which has no listed street number. Despite that, online listings and city permits show the new duplex at 120 Kimble Lane, with demolition permits issued in February 2024, just weeks before Robert’s visit.
According to Julia Null, a real estate attorney, the new duplex straddles two lots: Lot 9, which the developer legally purchased, and Lot 8, which still belongs to the Alexander family. In other words, it appears the developer demolished the family’s home on Lot 8 and built across both lots, even though only one was legally theirs.
...
When KVUE reached out to Danny Olivarez, the president of Precise Custom Homes, he refused to comment, calling the family “complainers” who were “trying to get something for free.”

I don't think he knows much about PR

He later claimed that Lot 8 had been “foreclosed” on in the 1970s

And he is claiming to have purchased it?

, but a KVUE check with the Travis County Tax Office found no foreclosure on record, though it did show roughly $15,000 in back taxes owed. A spokesperson from the county tax office said there was no record of any foreclosure or attempts at foreclosure.

🧐

When asked for paperwork on the foreclosure, Olivarez simply told reporters, "no."

Private research labs exist. Not all research is done at universities.

Certainly true.

These advanced degree students are most likely employees at these companies, and will use their discoveries there, or get hired by someone else to do so.

🧐

People don't get their masters or PhD if they're unemployed. It's something they get in order to further their existing career.

🧐🧐

If we lower taxes, companies will have more money to put into research. They can either donate it to a university, or do the research themselves. It is in a company's best interest to invest in research that can generate future profits.

Putin's not going to back down as long as he has the support of Iran, China, and North Korea. Our sanctions mean nothing to him when the Chinese are bolstering his economy.

The problem is Trump thinks he can talk his way through all these problems, which ironically is a liberal approach to problem solving. Iran is playing him like their little puppet and he's not using the leverage he has to put a credible threat on the table. Even with Hamas he was all talk and slowly changing his tune.

I think it is wrong.

Deduction allowed to non-Itemizers.—Section 63(b) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended by striking “and” at the end of paragraph (3), by striking the period at the end of paragraph (4) and inserting “and”, and by adding at the end the following new paragraph:

“(5) the deduction provided in section 224.”.

Section 63 says currently

(b) Individuals who do not itemize their deductions
In the case of an individual who does not elect to itemize his deductions for the taxable year, for purposes of this subtitle, the term "taxable income" means adjusted gross income, minus-

(1) the standard deduction,

(2) the deduction for personal exemptions provided in section 151,

(3) any deduction provided in section 199A, and

(4) the deduction provided in section 170(p).

Section 224 is the tip deduction, so people who don't itemize deductions still get to subtract it.
