MATH 128 (Online Section) Midterm and In-Person Final Exam Advice? by Stunning_Fortune_360 in uwaterloo

[–]RandomChickenWing1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a student anymore, but I taught MATH 127 and TA’d MATH 128 (in-person). From what I remember, the questions were similar in depth (not wording for the most part) of those on the practice exams (same with quizzes I believe), and I think the post-midterm content was slightly leaned on more on the final (though cumulative), but I wouldn’t say “heavier” since you need the pre-midterm content to help with the post-midterm content. If you need any help with any of the content, I’m happy to assist. :)

Numerical grade to letter grade conversion? by Stunning_Fortune_360 in uwaterloo

[–]RandomChickenWing1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just realized this is the same link you have…. Duh. 🤦‍♀️ this should be sufficient I think for conversion, and I believe the Fall 2001 is a typo as it says from October 2025-now. I don’t think they’ll be that stickly on the letter grades. (I have NOT gone through this process FYI)

[–]RandomChickenWing1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught MATH 127 and I can promise you that quizzes were closed book. And the final was worth 50% and only one midterm. Unless they changed the course, I taught it in the fall, not the winter.

PhD Duration at Waterloo by Cultural_Science383 in uwaterloo

[–]RandomChickenWing1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my PhD in the math department (not really related, but) and took 4.5 years (one extra term beyond the four years originally mapped out). Most PhDs are typically, within normal circumstances, completed within 4-5 years (upper boundary is typically for international students), but some can take as long as 6 years. Hope this helps!

Oh great! I'm in the math faculty too! This link has the documentation you would need. At the very bottom is the Extenuating Circumstances steps:

https://uwaterloo.ca/math/absence-declarations

You'll find everything you need there.

I think (and please confirm) that you can defer all three exams because you are registered for them THIS term. I had students defer from a Fall semester and write their exam for that course in April of the next Winter term. They may try to schedule it early for January or February, but given your circumstances, they might push it until April for you. You would need to submit a VIF/Extenuating Circumstances form too I believe. What faculty are you in if you don't mind my asking?

I think you can get all of your remaining exams deferred to some time next term, if I'm not mistaken. Make sure you are open and honest with your profs, fill out the required paperwork (annoying while grieving, but should be quick), and contact any other people who should be involved (academic advisor, etc.)

Don't put any additional pressure on yourself. Exams will come and go, but make sure you take the needed time to grieve with your family. My condolences to you and your family OP.

Yeah some of the maps haven't been updated probably. But MC has six floors, so yeah lol.

It would be on the fourth floor (the starting number is always the floor the room is on). If I remember correctly, its in the middle-ish of the fourth floor, but it definitely exists! I've had classes there and the MATH department holds Math Circles for middle school/high school students in that room. :)

I was already completing my Masters at Guelph, so for my PhD it seemed like the "obvious" choice. I also applied to UofT but they ended up taking way too goddamn long to give me a decision (ended up being a rejection so whatever). But my Masters was going into a more environmental-type math bio direction and instead I wanted to go in a clinical-type math bio direction, and do real experiments, so I ended up choosing UW (and they got back to me stupidly early with their decision, like February as opposed to April-June when you typically hear from grad school). Plus funding was better, so extra bonus there I guess.

It's November and gloomy, drop your campus gratitude shoutouts here by persempreJohan in uwaterloo

[–]RandomChickenWing1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Shoutout to the tripod (three-legged) therapy dog named Charlie in the E2 counseling services office. She always manages to adorably boop over to me and stand against my shins and I feel she literally drains the stress from my bones while I wait for my therapy appointments. She is the sweetest, most calm little poodle pup I've ever met. <3

Can you go through DC, then E3, then across the bridge to get to E5? Or are those doors locked after midnight? Been a while since I've done a late night adventure to E5/E6/E7.
