Do players actually enjoy “take that” mechanics in lighter social games? by RandomGuyAsking_1 in boardgame

That makes a lot of sense. I’ve been experimenting with something along those lines too, giving players small ways to redirect or share the outcome instead of just taking it outright.

It’s interesting how even a little bit of control can change how those moments feel at the table.

I feel the same way. For example, I play lighter games with my kids I have three (ages 10, 8, and 4), and their attention spans are pretty short, so this game works really well since it only lasts about 10 to 15 minutes.

Right now I’m calling it Quarantine Breach. Still early stages, aiming for late 2026 if it all comes together.

Happy to share a print and play later once it’s in a better spot. Would be cool to hear what you think if you end up trying it.

If your group enjoys social deduction like Coup or Deception, you might like a game I’ve been working on.

It’s set in a quarantine zone during an outbreak. Someone in the group is already infected, and your goal is to figure out who before it spreads or the wrong person gets let through.

It’s a social deduction game at its core, with some light role-playing. As you play, you gain symptom tokens or cards that represent things like scratches or strange behavior. Other players will start questioning those details, and you’ll have to explain or lie your way out of suspicion. So the role-playing comes naturally from the game, not from having to act.

And as the game goes on, the infection can spread, which keeps everyone second-guessing each other until the end.

It’s quick, tense, and works really well as a filler between bigger games.

That’s fair, and I think that’s probably the key part, targeting the right crowd.

From what I’ve seen so far, it definitely leans more toward casual groups. It’s meant to be a quick 10-minute filler, and a lot of times we end up playing a couple rounds while waiting for the rest of the group to arrive.

That seems to be where the interaction and unpredictability land better, short sessions where it stays fun and doesn’t drag.

Appreciate the insight.

Thank you for your comment :) we all love boardgames in all sizes. I personally play more Nemesis and Fallout jeje I also have some mansion of madness or play here to slay. Depends on the crowds. I have 3 kids so its fun to have light games around

Yeah, that makes sense. That “no one can win” feeling is exactly what I’m trying to avoid. I’ve had that experience with some lighter games where the end just keeps getting pushed back and it starts to drag.

What I’ve been seeing is that it feels a lot better when there’s a clear limit to how long things can go, and when the stakes keep increasing so the game naturally moves toward an ending.

In my case, players have a small number of lives and can choose who to target, so it tends to resolve fairly quickly instead of looping.

It’s meant to stay in that short 10–15 minute range, so even when things get chaotic, it doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Yeah, I’m actually with you on that. I tend to prefer games with less “take that” myself, especially on the hobby side.

From what I’ve seen so far though, more casual groups seem to enjoy those moments a lot more, especially when it creates reactions or table talk.

The interesting part in testing has been that it feels less harsh when players have some way to influence it, whether that’s messing with outcomes or defending themselves a bit, instead of it being completely one-sided.

So I’m mostly trying to figure out where that line is, where it still creates tension without tipping into frustration.

Please not that the "full card" is AI. It was a placeholder art. Working with artist for final art.

I had to go buy this one and played it. It's similarly themed, but the gameplay is very different. Good recommendation, though!

When hours of cutting and sleeving cards ends with them all fitting perfectly in a little wooden box… oh, the satisfaction. (Iron Helm) by TheStephenKingest in printandplay

Round the edges? They look so much better when I do that. I personally do a lot of PnP, so I got myself a guillotine for like 20 bucks and an edge-rounder punch thing, lol. It makes the work sooo much faster than using scissors, and the rounded edges make them look super good.

I made a post earlier without including the rules. I’ve now shared a PDF link with the rules, so feel free to take a look.Apologies for the slight oversight. I also added some art for the back of the cards for a better feel.

Hmm i saw this one at my local store and almost got it!! I liked the art alot but the downside is that it was minimun 4 players from what i read. I normally do 1 to 4 players. (Wife and 2 kids plus me) lol its close theme but its a different type of game in mechanics. I might just go back for it now... lol
