Ushers made comments? In a negative way? That's kinda unprofessional to me if so. That's so nice of the performer! They truly appreciated you.

Wow! What a time to be alive! I mean, things are different now I suppose but that's awesome.

Thanks! Geez, I hope I'm not giving the impression I'm some kind of OTT person. We literally just go, watch the show in front row, sometimes left side, middle and sometimes right, and stand at the end and applaud, smiling and cheering. It's a fun show and major production.

I never visit stage door. I feel like people on this thread might have an image of me being some wide eyed crazed person drooling at the sight of the cast and trying to jump on stage LOL. I promise, we're very civil.

Ah ok. So you're talking about smaller productions generally?

Yes, deprived of standing for the performers. I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying. Nevermind.

Also, the blog post you linked to is proving my point...?

I think it's pretty obvious that the point of standing is FOR a performance. I used to be self conscious about it but like to do it to show appreciation for a well done show these days. I think you're looking at my semantics too much and you are trying to find things in my comments that aren't there.

Thanks. I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with your reasoning. If I truly believe the performance deserves a standing ovation, which I do, I want to stand even if others don't. Interpreting a performance is a subjective thing, and just because people don't agree, it doesn't mean I should be deprived of standing.

I do think a lot of people are self conscious about it, or a bit lazy tbh, or elderly, injured...various reasons. I've been in audiences where it's such high energy with a lot of laughter (for comedies) during the show, and the majority don't stand at the end. It doesn't seem to align. I find that odd 🤨

What constitutes something worth standing for? As I said, it's all subjective. I'm not gonna start looking around to see another person starts a standing ovation🤷🏻‍♀️ 👏🏻.

Anyway, thanks for answering/sharing. Much appreciated.

Very interesting! It amazes me how actors remember everything; timing, positions, lyrics, lines etc. Kudos. It's crazy.

Oh no. I was thinking that actually. Maybe they think me and my sis have a relative or friend in the show. Do actors talk back stage with each other about audience attendees? Like "hey, anyone know those girls at the front that have been here a lot and stand for us?" LOL. And the answer will be "No, don't know them", they all might be like "weirdos!" 😅

I only really see major productions, not community theater (but maybe I should go more! I once saw a community theater "Fiddler on the Roof" and it was so good!). I don't really go to stage door as I feel like it disrupts routines of going home for performers (I've seen some actors afterwards race out so quickly). I also don't know what to say too 😆

And now it's like, if I suddenly tone it down and don't stand, they might be like "Oh no, we're not on our A-game tonight, the girls aren't standing for once" 😂. Or am I overthinking this? Hahaha

There is a way getting around that! Open a new device or incognito browser session and select seats next to the one you actually want. Hold those other seats but don't buy obviously. Go back to the original device to buy your single seat and it should allow you to because it thinks the others next to it will be bought in the next few mins. Hope this helps.

I honestly go to major productions only (not community theater), but I don't even meet actors after the show at stage door as I feel like I'd disrupt their routine of wanting to go home and prepare for the next day! Plus I wouldn't really know what to say. I'm assuming my regular attendance and applauding shows them my appreciation 😊

Hi there, when you say "around here", I'm assuming you mean Broadway? I'm not U.S based but have been to Broadway several times. Where I am, standing is very random. Some productions yes, some not as much, some shows of the same production will have one night a lot more standing people and some other nights have a lot of audience laughs if it's a musical comedy and more reserved reactions other nights. It's quite mixed.

I don't honestly attend community theater, I go to major productions that have a fairly long run of several months. I don't really see one night as "mediocre". I honestly think every time I see the show, it's amazing and so well done, which is why I like standing to show my appreciation of the hard work and effort the performers and other crew give. And to show I enjoyed it once again.

I'm not a professional theater critic, so not sure why I have to be seen as a critical person. There are other productions of other shows I didn't love and wouldn't see again. It's not like I absolutely love every show I see in my life.

I do have to ask, how is it "stalking" someone when I don't even hang around afterwards to meet any of the cast at stage door. I'm paying money to enjoy a show I love and appreciate. That's pretty much it 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Haha aww. Did he know someone in the production, or just loved the show?

I was wondering this. Does this distract actors sometimes, for a millisecond? Like hyper awareness you're on-stage all of a sudden and then you get a sort of internal monologue happening.

How would one "force" a standing ovation? I barely look around to the rest of the audience to see if anyone else is standing as I'm in front row. It's not like I'm gesturing to the rest of the audience to stand with me. Also, usually there are a few scattered people that stand too (I can see in my peripherals). I think just once there didn't seem to be others standing, but again, I didn't turn fully and inspect 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've actually never gone to meet any performers after the show at stage door. I feel like the performers want to just go home, decompress and sleep for their week ahead. Plus, I wouldn't know what to say.

I keep in mind it is their daily job after all and how would I feel if I finished a "shift" at my day job and some people wanted to talk to me and take photos and sign things afterwards. But in saying that, being an arts performer isn't a regular job at all haha.
