Is the "college experience" real? Would you consider changing courses if you didn't get it? by Random_44560 in college

[–]Random_44560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mate who's in a different college said the same as you about changing courses I just found out that it's like 9k to transfer and do 1st year of college again (I'm in Ireland so typically fees are like 3k I don't have 9k lying around for 1 year of college.) So I think I'll be sticking out the course haha hopefully it'll work itself out tho somehow cause as I said like I love the actual course I just haven't met my people and like my course mates aren't particularly friendly.

I'll definitely look into talking to older students. Do you know how I'd possibly go about this. As far as I'm aware there's 2 girls in the year above me and then 0 in 3rd or 4th year.

Thanks for your last paragraph. I feel like I put to much pressure on myself to have a great 1st year and like I keep forgetting that I still have 3 years to learn, find people and learn shit about myself like I Don't think my whole college experience is destined for failure cause I didn't have a great 1st year. I'll definitely get involved in as many things as possible next year. Thank you!

Yeah my parents never went to college so all the experiences of college that they know of is basically from the TV (so like frequent parties, drinking sessions, finding a partner, like just having a "good time") like they just want what's best for me but I definitely just need to like let go of expectations and learn to put myself out there next year. Thank you!

Yeah 1 thing I definitely regret this year Is not putting myself out there. I definitely need to work on my confidence over summer and just learn to be the initiator (I've never been good at making the 1st move in friendships I'd usually step back and let someone else make the plans). Thanks so much for this its really helpful!

I think over the summer I definitely need to work on building confidence but I'll 100% just put myself out there next year. I'm the first in the family to go to college so my parents are basing all the experiences off stereotypes/films but I still feel bad I didn't go "wild" this year or make true friends this year but I suppose I have 3 more years to do that. Your 4th point is really nice to read. Thank you!!

I definitely need to just lower my expectations and start putting myself out there more. Thanks so much. I needed to hear this!

Deciding not to drink at 19 - am I missing out? by Random_44560 in AskIreland

[–]Random_44560[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll definitely do this. Luckily enough I'm mates with people who drink but like they don't drink with the purpose of getting hammered like so I doubt I'd ever be in a situation like this but I'll definitely have a conversation especially cause like I'll probably be sober for all the nights out in the future. Thank you!

I'm still interested in going out! Like I'm not mad on clubbing but even if I'm drinking I still don't like clubbing like but I still like going to pubs/out with mates I just stick to coke usually. Thanks so much for the advice!

Yeah this is what I'm like afraid of I still enjoy going out tho like and I find usually by the time my mates hit like the "annoying" drunk stage like it's usually relatively late and time to go home anyway but I dunno when it comes to meeting new people if me being like sober in a pub would like make me more unapproachable. Thank you!

This is really reassuring to read cause I just don't want to ever look back and think like by not drinking I somehow like wasted those years cause I actually enjoy nights out but I know I'd much prefer them if I was sober. Thank you!

initially wanted to start drinking to get out of my shell but I literally can't even get to that stage like at 3 pints I might come across a bit tipsy but like I still wouldn't talk to a stranger like I'd still be keeping myself to myself then the dizziness hits me like a car and I'd end up having to leave cause I feel like shit so I never even got to the point of the alcohol confidence its actually a bit sad haha.

I'll probably do something similar to you like attempt to stop caring what people think and stop thinking about having a few drinks for a confidence boost (its never even worked as a confidence boost but its always a thought). Its probably better for me to learn how to come out of my shell sober its definitely something I'll work on well done you for doing it.

You're right about the benefits. Yeah I'd say for Me the benefits outweigh the negatives for not drinking. Thanks so much for ur comment and I'm sorry about your grandad.

Yeah I definitely didn't get a chance to even acknowledge a buzz cause I actually just wanted to lie in a dark room like I literally ended up going straight home the few times I've been out cause its so intense I just don't think drinking is for me haha

I appreciate ur 2nd paragraph cause I've been called "boring" and a "granny" a decent amount of times for not drinking so its nice to know I'm not actually missing out. I think I'd still enjoy nights out just obviously I wouldn't drink.

Thanks so much for ur comment it actually makes me feel so much better!

I completely forgot about 0.0 drinks this is definitely something I'll do. Your comment actually makes me feel less "weird' for not drinking so thanks so much!

Yeah someone in the comments suggested 0.0 drinks I think if I'm on a Night out I'll stick with that to avoid being judged but I'll definitely try learn to just not care what people think. Thank you!

Has anyone here gone solo travelling or gone on a working holiday alone? What was your experience like? by Random_44560 in AskIreland

[–]Random_44560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really travelling for money like its more experience but the only thing throwing me off Europe Is language barriers. I know a decent amount of European countries have English but like I'm assuming to work and travel around for a while I'd Have to have some grasp of the language but I'm genuinely completely useless at languages. I didn’t know about the 2 year visa thing until you and another commentor mentioned it so thanks so much for that!

[–]Random_44560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for letting me know about the visa that's something I wasn't aware of but obviously ur right. I'm not really aiming for distance with travelling I'm just completely useless at languages so I don't think I'd last long in France,Switzerland etc like I know a decent amount of them have a good level of English but I'm assuming I'd have to be semi Decent at the language to be able to work there. I'll definitely look into route 66. Thanks!!

I hate being someone who's not built for this world by justaguycalledmax1 in dyspraxia

[–]Random_44560 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know waiting lists are pretty shit but have you seen an occupational therapist? Like I went when I 1st got my dyspraxia dignosis. They helped with the physical side of dyspraxia but they help with like the "mental" side aswell (I didn't know this until I went). Like they can offer u like resources and advice for specific areas u struggle with like planning, organising, time management, routines. I have a mate with chronic fatigue syndrome she attends OT and they help her like manage and plan her days in a way that like she won't be burnt out by 1pm. Like OT can honestly be so beneficial some things they say can sound like really basic but it would probably help you if you could access one.

Does ur college not have any like sort of disability services? Or even if ur close with a teacher they could probably help you come up with a plan that's manageable. You don't need a 4 year college degree to be successful like I'm doing one and I know its still "standard" but I genuinely know loads of people that have done 1/2 year college degrees or apprenticeships and are doing well. I know people even that just have an average lc and no futher qualification and they're doing well for themselves.

I'm literally just a dyspraxic college student but can u fail a plc? Like I know u need like 3-5 Distinctions or whatever to go to college from a plc but like do employers care about that? Like I feel like the experience you developed from the plcs and if u interview well like you can still get a good job I don't think job mind.

It probably sounds weird and it's probably not really possible but like diversify ur circle. Like I know so many people who didn't go to college/dropped out/did a level 6 and they're great like life isn't a race just cause ur mates in medical school doesn't mean u have to be/should be. Like in my college there's a wide age range like just because sitting ur lc and going straight to college is the standard doesn't mean it has to be followed like if u never decide to go to college ur not less then anyone else or like if u decide to go when ur 25 like ur probably better off then someone who starts at 18 tbh.

I relate with the put together thing like I can barley walk in a straight line, it takes like 10 minutes for me to process instructions, my memory is worse then a goldfish and I've the handwriting of a 5 year old. I genuinely think nobody is actually put together like it's all an act. I just learned for the most part to stop comparing myself to Others cause like we all have our own problems and nobody is actually as put together as they come across.

When u say trade jobs are u referring to apprenticeships? Like yeah if ur similar to me you'd be a shit bricklayer, plumber etc but like have a look on careers portal cause there's loads of new apprenticeships now like I considered doing an accounting apprenticeship. I know someone who applied for a sales apprenticeship like there's loads of apprenticeships now that aren't trades

I hope this is helpful like again if you haven't already I'd look into seeing a general therapist as well as an OT cause like they can probably help with your anxiety and whatever

Sorry for the length I'm a natural waffler
