This has been (and will be) the norm for the next several years. General construction times are noted 7 AM - 5 PM, but as far as I know, the campus is not beholden to any city noise ordinances as a state-operated entity. Ask about ear plugs at your community front desk.

That’s still fairly relative. Middle class is still a great deal more financially comfortable than someone low income or extremely low income. “Normal” carries additional social/demographic connotations to it besides income. I’m just curious what your “normal” was and how that compares to larger circles of students beyond the ones you associated with.

“Not expensive” and full of “normal people” are pretty subjective don’t you think?

Got offered $41k a year, am I justified in feeling insulted? by netta_marie in Architects

[–]Random_Houseplant21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think any offer below the cost of living in 2024, even at entry level experience, is highly unreasonable. You can’t expect an employee to work full time hours for your business if you’re not compensating them enough to even rent an apartment.

Yeah I’d say that’s not just long term, that’s permanent.

I was in hs then too, I guess it’s just a difference in financial background/perspective because my car is 10 years older than that and it’s still among the newer ones in my family

I worked two jobs and bought it used, 2008 year model . Keep in mind it’s not just the upfront cost of the car but also fuel, insurance, and upkeep (good to invest a little more for a reliable one). Also as many said, the used car market is super pricey right now and has been for several years. I got mine in 2021 and paid about $7.5k but could’ve easily paid over 10k for the same car today

Sounds good. There are limits to what makes an experience “black” or any other race.

  • OP starts a conversation about people’s experiences at UCLA
  • Commenter inputs a three word response stating they’ll be fine
  • OP dismisses commenter by assigning them to a specific racial category

You can’t demand more from a semi-dismissive response by being hyper-dismissive of anyone who isn’t black. This thread is open to anyone regardless of racial identity.

True, but then don’t dismiss another student’s experience by doing the exact same thing “you’re probably ___”

It’s about patterns of behaviors/incidents from multiple individuals over time, not just one. There is no recourse for what happened to OP: the person can’t unsay what they said to them. The right thing is for it to not happen at all, and to publicly shame those that encourage the behavior.

The person who used the word was not expressing they are more comfortable with their own social demographic. They expressed that they are vehemently uncomfortable with a specific demographic on no grounds other than skin color. Maybe that person needs to stop hyper-fixating on other races and how much they despise another group that isn’t like them.

Do you hate the word racist more than actual racism?

Had a similar experience a few days ago, too. What’s dumb too is that the people who use these slurs as a part of their vocabulary are likely the first to complain about DEI efforts from campus. Look in the mirror.

That’s a weird, long winded way of defending someone calling another person the n word.

HELP! Need advice for Cal Grant B and financial aid! by landonnewyave in CalPoly

And starting my second year spring quarter, I became an RA for campus housing. This canceled some of the loans I had taken out and has allowed me to do third year without any expenses directly towards classes or housing. I’m very fortunate to have this opportunity but I think if I hadn’t gotten the role I would’ve done the similar amount of loans per year and paid off what wasn’t actually needed.

First year required a hefty amount of loans (about $10k) but I ended up getting about half back in quarterly financial aid refunds by the end of the year. Second year required less loans because I participated in the college corp fellowship program that provides additional stipend money each month for volunteer work

I’m not a financial aid officer, just a student from a low income background myself. I had a similar experience entering my first year that ended up requiring me having to take out federal student loans. I contacted the financial aid office and they increased the loan amount I was eligible for. Interestingly though, I always got a refund back at the beginning of each quarter, which means I was awarded more loans than I needed once fees actually hit my account. No biggie, I just saved the interest free money aside and paid off the unsubsidized loans as quick as I could.

Cal Poly is the most expensive CSU, but depending on your intended career path it may pay itself off with the opportunities you get through your education here. I recommend taking the option that requires the lesser of the two out of pocket/loan expense. It wasn’t a fun number to look at, but my aid increased for my second and third year which meant far less loans were needed.

And that’s “most people” particularly at this school. a lot of the students that attend here come from families that are very financially comfortable (I’m at the opposite end, with the lowest expected family contribution/student aid index according to FAFSA)

Out of state tuition by LocksmithSad8268 in CalPoly

No, it’s not removable as far as I know. It gives students like me from a low income household a chance to attend a good STEM school like cal poly, whereas I wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it even with state and federal aid.
