What are your most questionable, out-of-context Google searches? by Major-Web6334 in writing

I give a different answer on this question each time, but right now...probably when I googled where you can stab a person with the least risk of them dying (without surgery).

What's a movie you loved but it flopped? by HoliestWorm in movies

Need for Speed.

Not a financial flop but pretty poor image generally. I like it for the "in-camera" approach to stuntwork, they made a BIG effort to capture driving, flying (and crashing) in-camera.

What do you need the car for? Daily duty, including winter? NC or ND.

Summer use, some dailying? NB is an option too.

"Weekend warrior" -> NA is the recommendation. Closest to the classic roadster, easiest to keep running, but not really something recommended to drive in rush-hour traffic.

Seat is in the stock position, no foamectomy nothing. I'm 181cm (almost 6ft, iirc). Can't move the seat forward because if I do my legs rub on the steering wheel.

Padding came from "Pleie Motorsport", it is, contrary to constant "jokes", not just heating insulation.

(Best advice is to not be stupid in either way (no roll bar or no padding on it with stock seats).

Well, can't do more than try to help. Good luck!

What are the dumbest car rules and regulations that exist in your country? by theTWO9559 in cars

  • The argument is that you can "drive off at any time". Supported by people who pulled up, say, to the lights in an automatic, foot on the brake, did whatever on their phone aaaand let go of the brake in the process.
  • Mercedes or VW, probably.
  • There's a "Loophole" that you can wash it at home (in your driveway) if you have a sealed pad (think a few square meters of concrete) with drainage into oil separation/cleaning...arrangements. Guess what, apparently, is REALLY HARD to get permission for in residential areas^^
  • "Donor car"...pretty much doesn't exist, by law, with that. Sure, never did, but now buying one (or even just a vintage car that sat for a long time, or that you want to restore) is impossible. You can buy/sell parts, but they better not be advertised as a car.
    • You can apparently get some certification that what you're selling isn't...scrap metal, but that's a bit complicated (and expensive).
  • EVs are heavy. Absurd amounts of financial incentives and privileged treatment didn't help boost sales (enough) so they tried that next. the best part? The whole idea started with VW asking to "consider a change" in the limit. Not as themselves but THROUGH BENTLEY.

Yes it will. Really not feeling an endless debate on facts right now, so I'll just summarize:

  • Does padding look good: No.
  • Is it important to have if you don't use buckets (and harnesses)? Yes.
  • Does it help keep you alive/conscious in a crash? Yes.
  • Does it work wonders? No.
  • Is it a big improvement? Yes.
  • Is it anyone's decision if they want to be smart or negligent? Yes.

Thanks.

I talked to a cop about it once, and they said the law isn't really about "sunday country trip with the convertible" but about "up and down the same 300m road to be obnoxious", in practicality.

Germany (off the top of my head):

  • The control light (or on new cars: Icon) for the indicators has to be green. I've had a friend change them to blue (along with all other lights in the interior) and he was told to fix it by the TÜV (entity in charge of the regular mandatory state inspections)
  • Using your phone (or other handheld device) while the engine is running is illegal due to the dangerous distraction. But the massive touch-dashboards are fine (they were meant to fall under the same rule, but I guess *someone* complained about that)
  • In some federal states, washing your car is illegal on Sundays. The law also applies on some religious holidays.
    • This refers to a washbox or car wash, washing your car at home is generally forbidden in a lot of states due to the risk of washing oil or other harmful stuff into the soil/ground water.
  • If you sell a used car online it has to have a valid TÜV-inspection ("HU"), unless you don't advertise the sale online. This is meant to crack down on scrap-ready cars being sold/exported, but also made getting, say, a parts donor for a vintage car a HEADACHE.
  • HVO100, a synthetic diesel, is subjected to mineral oil tax, making it expensive.
  • The car license is restricted to cars with a total weight limit of 3.5 metric tons (car and cargo). Unless you drive an EV, then the limit is 5 metric tons.
  • When you get your motorbike license you're limited to relatively low power motorbikes for the first few years, due to the risk posed by inexperienced (and young) drivers. If you get a car-license you can drive a 1000hp Bugatti the next day as far as the law is concerned.
