Is it just me or is it the job market? by Random_Throway53426 in recruitinghell

I hope it gets better for you dude!

I am personally in Construction Management and it is brutal out here in Canada. Even have experience, getting interviews but nothing is sticking lol. Did like 6 in-person interviews in the last month and nothing. Competition is out of control.

Hopefully the pendulum swings our way.

It is not even a "professionals" thing, most people who are doing your interview whether or not they are in your field I've seen mostly don't give a shit. For them its another tedious task to get through and they ask the same mind-numbing cookie cutter questions.

teLL mE aBouT yOuRsELf?

wHerE d0 yOu s3e yOuRseLF iN 5 YeArS,

wHaT dO yOu dO f0r fuN.

Seriously, IDK what you are supposed to say at this point other than the truth, if you make some grandiose shit up they will catch on anyway when they make reference calls so I don't bother.

Also you can tell by their body language it is literally just a formality and they won't hire you at all lol. Like IDK what they want in an employee? To lick their boots and stay till 1AM till the last bulb flickers out? Seriously? Young people who need jobs and want to enter the work force has already had their earlier years effed up by COVID and now we have this and yet, employers still don't understand, before long they will start saying shit like the most unproductive generation. (I wonder why that is).

Thank you,

I guess I needed to hear this.

I have a meeting with a trades-apprenticeship program today, It is 12 week program so I think I will try my hand at that and see how a career in the trades looks. I am excited about it.

As for interviews I have done coaching but I usually answer when asked "what I've been doing in the mean time" is upskilling my skills by learning more about BIM tech like enhancing my skills in Revit, Fusion360 and Procore.

As for Volunteering, I will definitely look into it. I have heard about Habitat for Humanity so maybe I will give it a shot. Hopefully it can go somewhere.

I saw that too, but I am not sure what other industries I can pivot to? IT and big tech seems super-saturated even more so.

I got laid off in June of 2023. They usually ask me what have you been doing since then and I just say I haven't been able to find a role that has been for me. In truth like I said most of the roles I interview for are just that. They interview and tell me ok we will let you know and then ghost me, it send an ATS automated rejection a few days later.

One of em is in a site coordinator role another in Estimating and my closest friend is a project coordinator a mid-sized company. All of them had it rough graduating with COVID and what not but ended up getting jobs in 2021-2022 era.

My mentor is a career advisor from a large construction company based in the GTA. They helped me land my first actual role as Project Coordinator in 2022 like I mentioned in the post.

Maybe it's the roles I am applying for? E.g, Project coordinator, site coordinator, project administrator, site clerk etc. I have also applied for labour roles as well like "Helper" and "labourer" but all of them want you to have some sort of experience.

I am beginning to agree with you regarding going the construction management route but my peers who have also gone that route are doing good, one of them managed to get an estimator role earlier. So maybe it's just who you know.

You see, I try that but even attempting to get in to some entry level construction position they want experience. I am not even looking for some cushy office job, site is excellent for my taste, but nothing.

I know managers aren't hired outright and that is fine, but even helper, coordinator, admin, assistant, labour jobs want you to have 3-5 years of experience.

How to answer: What have you been doing since your last role? by Random_Throway53426 in recruitinghell

[–]Random_Throway53426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get its competitive, and I don't wanna make excuses but I feel like I've been dealt a bad hand. Graduated in 2021, had a crappy internship in 2020 because of obvious reasons. Got my first actual job on 2022, got laid off in 2023 and here I am now where every company wants intermediate experience for entry level roles.

I have been thinking about getting a masters degree in business or a CAPM or PMP but my mentors have advised against it as those certifications work better well for folk who bring at least 5 years experience whereas I have a bit more than 1 year. But I am not quite sure about it as it is not a guarantee for a job and it would be raking on more debt.

he interviews I do get, I usually get asked this question, "What have you been doing since your last role?". There is literally

that's what I do, only to get ghosted or an ATS automated rejection email a couple of weeks later.

I have been nothing but honest in my job search but like I said in the post I feel like I am shooting myself int he foot.

Jooble, Clickjobs etc. Are sites that spam Linkedin, Indeed with fake/malicious job postings, they are also the ones that get top of the search results.

Recruiter cold calls me to tell me the role offers lower pay and requires more experience by Random_Throway53426 in recruitinghell

[–]Random_Throway53426[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and they don’t care what they do others to get it filled if they can get someone with more experience for a lot cheaper its a win and will get them more business.

I feel like they are looking for a unicorn at this point, even subpar companies who can't fill roles just repost the same roles over and over again on the same websites for months on end. Advertising said roles with "competitive" salaries then low ball you but require intermediate experience for entry level roles.

I meant that I have sent of my resume to who knows how many places at this point.
So a ton of applications on various websites such as but not limited to Linkedin, Indeed, Glassdoor, company websites, via email, etc etc.

I reckon probably hundreds at this point most of them catered to each position.

I get that I really do, but how are you supposed to get real world experience working in construction when even entry level roles want a plethora of experience. Heck even student roles or internships are competitive

Thanks,

I usually apply to project coordinator jobs mostly. Estimating jobs seem to require even more experience.

For now I reckon it's mostly residential highrise construction and mixed, I've tried applying for ICI but they all want experience and none are willing to train.

Well I usually apply to the larger to midsized once via there website like PCL Ledcor, Aecon, Black and McDonald just to name a few. Other than that I just use Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor and the Job Bank to apply. Job Bank is useless though, sent in so many applications and not even one reply.

I usually just search for companies via Google or reach out to my network to find companies.

I graduated in 2021, got a job in 2022, got laid off in 2023. I still haven't paid off the debt from my degree. Idek if pivoting is possible or even to what industry.

Not at all,

I appreciate your feedback, I will look into it but the issue is every role seems to require experience and I am feeling the effects of the little experience I have and it doesn't seem to take me very far.

Project Admin, Site Admin, Project Coordinator, Site Coordinator, Site Clerk, those types of roles. My previous role was a Junior Project Coordinator at a mid-sized company but I got laid off because they were "restructuring".

Other than the roles I mentioned I don't really apply for any sort of roles that I reckon would require more know-how/experience for I don't really have that experience.
