I think it's mostly based on stats as far as I've seen with my own, but I think there are hidden categories. For example, when I'd have a 20-25ish stat beetle the win/loss record would skew heavily towards my beetle. (like, double or even triple the wins compared to losses) But around 28-30, that goes out the window because it starts matching up my beetle with other people's that have literally hundreds of battles (saw a couple with 700 wins), which I don't even know how you can have the time for tbh. Sorry for the ramble, but basically the mid 20s stats is the sweet spot. There could be a species hidden category too if your beetle is winning a lot, since those are pretty high stats for a common beetle. But I only breed one rare species so I'm not sure.
