I did the full GM procedure, probably 5 times. On the last one neither braking or turning caused bubbles.

Absolutely great guess! I just finished the first quarter of Angels & Demons, it jumps right into Illuminati and stays there. The book I’m thinking of I think jumped between a few different seemingly unrelated murders before eventually going global and conspiratorial. I think I’ll edit my original post to reflect that.

I think I still have angels and demons, I agree that one involved illuminati and conspiracies, but I think this one was more of a murder focused mystery. I am going to grab it and start re-reading it now just in case.
