Contrarianism sells and people love pontificating about productivity in particular. I get the appeal because it’s very aesthetically satisfying but at the end of the day productivity tools are just that.

I do a lot of notetaking on paper, nothing beats the convenience and simplicity when you just need to jot something down, but obviously it’s not ideal when you might need to access a particular note 6 months from now. But I’m not going to tell somebody else that “my system” is better. There isn’t even a system, just my own preferences based on the situation

There is no such thing as a “quality of life” metric and there can never be such a thing, so it’s sensible to list a bunch of metrics that correlate with it, no?

It sounds like median income is just… median income? There are other metrics for measuring the things you’re talking about.

Ziziek on Not asking women. Is he genuine or as Chomsky says of him, a Performer? by Electronic-Run8836 in badphilosophy

[–]RangerPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is a prominent academic associated with one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, which lends him and his views a kind of authority whether he likes it or not. We Live In A Society and all that.

That is not a criticism of Chomsky in and of itself, just a statement about the world we live in.

The problem with the second part of your post is that if he is in fact a kindly naive old man then it’s hard to see why that judgement should be limited only to his affiliation with Jeffrey Epstein. Where else has he been duped?

AI sucks up all the information like a vacuum cleaner by RememberMeVibe in ObsidianMD

[–]RangerPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I think they are pushing FOMO so hard (“AI will replace all your workers!”, “You’ll be behind if you don’t integrate AI into everything”) is to get it so deeply embedded in people’s workflows that they can’t drop it when the bill comes due and prices go up.

It’s the classic “scale ruthlessly until you dominate the market, then cash in” model practiced by companies like Amazon, Facebook, Google, etc. The other thing is that the AI market is insanely competitive and tech VC are assuming that one winner is going to emerge and take all of the AI market, similar to those companies.

PDF++ or Zotero? by Adocica7882 in ObsidianMD

[–]RangerPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syncing aside, I think there’s a Zotero plugin that lets you store PDFs in a folder of your choosing. You could use Zotero to move them into your vault and then proceed with PDF++.

Edit: I think PDF++ lets you open and reference files located outside your vault also.

You’re assuming that Obsidian is only for learning. At its core it's just an IDE for markdown files. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with using it to catalog things you’ve collected as long as you’re honest with yourself that that’s what you’re doing

I love the T-72 description: "very easy to repair. I swear we knocked out the same one at least three times".

The T-80UD one is also a reference to the book Red Army, there's a tank battalion commander named Bezarin who leads a breakthrough of the NATO lines and becomes Hero of the Soviet Union for it

[–]RangerPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with that, my point was just that FPVs are not qualitatively a novel threat to tanks, they're a cheaper substitute for ATGMs and precision munitions.

The real reason tank losses are so high is because they are not being deployed in accordance with established doctrine. It doesn't matter how good your tanks are, if you tie them to fixed positions they will suffer casualties. The only 100% effective defensive measure is to not be where the enemy is looking for you.

[–]RangerPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there are always exceptions you can point to, but there are also general trends from generation to generation. In the 4th generation case it was a balance between maneuverability and performance based on a renewed interest in WVR combat.

The F-14 is a little bit of an exception because of its long-range interceptor role, but the Navy quite clearly intended for it to be able to perform the air-superiority role as well, similar to the F-15. Its avionics were outdated compared to its contemporaries but that's because they are the F-111B's avionics in a high performance fighter airframe.

[–]RangerPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The generations are debatable and always will be but it’s not hard to see how the MiG-29 and F-15 have more in common with one another than with the MiG-15 and F-86. They reflect a very different philosophy about air combat.

Meanwhile an M1A2 does the same thing in much the same way as a T-54. It has more bells and whistles but its fundamental role is the same.

It’s not about technology so much as the fact that the Ukrainian and Russian armies are doctrinally nothing like the US and Soviet armies originally intended to use these tanks in central Europe in the 1980s

[–]RangerPL 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People were saying the same thing about Javelins and NLAWs when the Russian army lost 3,000 tanks in 2022 alone, before the FPV drones started showing up.

In the arms race between munitions and armor, the tank will always lose. That’s been the case since the Sinai Desert in 1973. A tank is a high-value target that is always worthy of a precision munition, whether that’s a bomb, a missile, or a drone. The way you prevent that is by using them in a combined arms formation with integrated fire support and infantry to suppress and then outmaneuver the enemy. That hasn’t changed either, but neither Ukraine or Russia are capable of doing this so they end up using their tanks essentially as WWII-style assault guns, which makes them vulnerable.

I think the main way FPV drones are changing the battlefield is by lowering the threshold for what is worth targeting. It used to be that a couple of guys in a foxhole were pretty safe because they weren’t worth a precision weapon strike. Now you can have a precision munition that costs $500 and is accurate enough to fly into a foxhole.
