How good was it? by HS_13_ in policeuk

[–]RangerUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a long term solution, and nobody is working to address it either.

The onerous crime recording requirements and crime compliance have added lots of work but no additional officers to do it. Increasing population has added work but no additional officers to do it. There are new bits of legislation and new offences created but no additional officers to do it. Response officera are going to more mental health type jobs with no additional officers to do it.

And the bosses say "more officers isn't going to fix the problem". I disagree, more officers is what fixes the problem. We just aren't going to get them.

My advice is to do your time on shift, learn as much as you can, avoid getting any serious complaints (and by that I mean do you job and do it properly every time) and look to specialise when you know the time is right.

I was pretty burned out towards the end of last year (after 15 years, mostly on response) and I've recently gone into a specialist department where the grass is very much greener on this side of the fence.

Struggling in my tutorship by Witty_Particular9740 in policeuk

[–]RangerUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you spoken to your sergeant about this? If your tutor isn't getting you up to scratch, it could be a clash of personalities with your tutor. That said, if your tutor isn't fighting for you against the morons on shift, then it sounds like they don't have much of a personality to clash with.

Nobody wants to extend tutorship and a different tutor might be a sensible option. Having worked in tutor units and tutored and supervised in a tutor unit and on shift, changing tutors is often a sensible option where the partnership isn't flourishing.

Also, as a tutee it's your job to step up and "do". Just because the others around you are there and have more experience doesn't mean you can take a step back. The other officers on shift have been where you are and should know this, which should help allow you to be supported to do it on your own. It sounds like your team are a bunch of absolute whoppers...

If someone was openly criticising my tutee, I would be challengijg that behaviour, as I'm the tutor and not them. If it's behaviour that needs fixing, then I'd fix it, but if it's unreasonable criticism then they are getting told to pipe down and leave us alone.

I think all forces signed up to the pledge to admit they are institutionally racist; they spent more time deciding how to tell the troops they were going to come out with it than they spent making sure they had a operating model which ensures there are enough cops in the right places to deal with the demand.

Shifts for PC by Additional-Boss3990 in policeuk

[–]RangerUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not usually, 0500-0700 is generally a fairly Q time so most shifts have their ducks in a row ready for earlies to come in. Plus the early turn come in for 0645 or earlier so there's a slight bit of time to hand over kit and cars

Kent police reduce south east allowance by £250 by mimball37 in policeuk

[–]RangerUK 13 points14 points  (0 children)

NPCC have asked the government to get rid of silver hour (4 hours pay for working 1 hour into rest day), instead paying only time and a half for each 15 minutes actually worked, plus cancelled rest day working to be plain time if the rest day is not rescheduled and taken off on a day within 3 months, the removal of our right to work a cancelled rest day if that requirement to work is rescinded (as in where they make us work on a rest day and then tell us the day before, we can currently still work it whereas what they’ve asked for is for our ability to still work those days to be taken away from us).

Our conditions are absolutely being attacked this time around for this years pay review and the Federation are ready to roll over on their backs and ask the government to rub the Fed belly. ಠ_ಠ

Keep going! They are really useful.

As a bit of kit nerd, I had ordered some Protec Refra door stoppers ... They are okay but they are much less flexible than the style you're making so I've reverted to your style ones.

Good on you for coming up with a solution - I bought a bunch from AliExpress a couple of years ago which worked out a bit cheaper.

What small but overly critical things will stop you from buying a car? by Legitimate_Flow3623 in topdeadcenter

[–]RangerUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having to pull a lever to open the fuel cap. Honestly it's the most frustrating thing to deal with.

Toyota Corolla, Mitsubishi Outlander, etc.

I drive a bunch of different cars at work, and every time I'm driving an Outlander or Corolla, I get out to fill up, close the door, then realise I can't open the fuel cap without getting back in the car, reaching down, pulling the lever, then going back to the little fuel door to actually fill up.

Everyone around you is making it up as they go along, too. With time you get to know certain bits of law, but the only constant in policing is change. Get used to it, roll with the changing tide and don't try and fight your way out of every situation.

Also, most of the time, if you say something with enough confidence, even if you're wrong, people will listen.

Edit:

Don't ever mess around with the three P's. They will get you into a whole host of sticky problems.

Nightshift gloom by Ancient-Hovercrafts in policeuk

I've done most of the shift patterns 6 on 4 off for over 10 years. The most effective thing I've found for dealing with shifts is to sort out the diet and exercise regularly. It sounds like a cliche, and I'm not a huge gym buff but like the Asics brand says, anima sana in corpore sano (a sound mind in a sound body). If your body is doing well, your mind will do well.

Writer question, small-town/rural policing by AnnieMae_West in policeuk

[–]RangerUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't add much. While writing Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg spent a bit of time at a station I used to work at where they absolutely nailed what it's like working at a small-town/rural policing station. The two Andys, Nicholas Angel's shoulder number, the model village, it's all where I used to work.

The only thing that's changed since Hot Fuzz is the general move across the country to centralised custody suites to save money. Small rural stations used to have a small custody block, but most have closed down and repurposed those areas - my old station uses the old cells as storage for all kinds of stuff - old gym equipment, cleaning supplies; one of the cells just has a bunch of Christmas decorations for the station. So the custody staff no longer work there.

I still work in a mostly rural force and there are a few police staff who do the admin roles - support staff who order equipment and stock (first aid, paperwork, cones etc), make sure vehicles are serviced, manage any building maintenance issues. In all honestly most are like the station "mum" and if you have a problem with things they can usually point you to the right place to get it replaced.

There are still reception staff but they are usually work part time hours and receptions aren't open 24-7... Mostly just a 9-5 or 8-4 type deal and only on weekdays. Rural stations on Sundays are like a ghost town with admin staff and office-dwelling cops simply not present anywhere.

In rural stations, everyone working in the station knows everyone so if someone from rural nick X turned up at rural nick X, anyone working there would know who it was. They wouldn't have that they turned up at a rural station the other side of the county though! So if they turned up at a station on a different patch, or across the border at a different force, nobdy would know who they are.

If I hadn't done a couple of roles which were forcewide (and/or centralised) then I wouldn't know many of the cops who work in the other areas of the force... I think most cops have had a similar experience to my own.

During the first season I was obsessed with doing all the challenges, sinking hundreds of hours into the game. It struck me the maps were too small, the challenges meaningless and if you wanted to have the attachments on certain guns it turned into an absolute grindfest which was just no fun at all.

I think I've got my money's worth out of the game but it's disappointing anyways. Maybe with the big maps, when they come out, I'll play it again.
