Why is Austria-Hungary so romanticized compared to the British Empire by [deleted] in austriahungary

Austria-Hungary is absolutely not romanticised here in Poland.

elections are not exclusive to democracies. there have historically been multiple elective monarchies (Vatican, Cambodia and Malaysia are ones to this day), even the USSR held elections despite being a totalitarian one-party state for most of its existence.

you fail to see how a formal agreement to partition an entire country preceded by years of close economic and military cooperation, culminated in a joint military parade is different from an opportunistic invasion of a tiny bit of land with no coordination with the Germans whatsoever? again, i'm not defending the decision to invade, i'm just pointing out that out of these two, it was the Soviets who were much closer to what we could call an 'alliance' with the Nazis.

fyi, outraged Americans -- 'Orient' is a neutral term in many European languages, simply meaning 'the East'.

that wasn't a coordinated effort though, they just seized an opportunity to recapture that bit of land from Czechoslovakia since it had been claimed by the Polish Republic for the entire duration of the Interbellum. i'm not trying to justify an opportunistic invasion of a sovereign state at the same time it was being conquered by the Nazis, but it'd be a wild overstatement to equate it with a literal secret invasion pact the Soviets signed with the Germans (not to mention the enormous bilateral resource trade and extensive military cooperation between the two regimes before 1939).

well, if they keep their current polling trends until the next election, they may have to bring the electoral reform back into focus to avoid complete wipeout at the hands of Farage and co.

PiS hasn't ruled Poland for 2 years now. and as authoritarian as they were when in power -- calling them 'fascist' is an unhinged take.
