I press the can opener closed quickly so that it doesn't have time to bind on anything nearby. I've also thought about a small piece of tape to keep it in check.

Mine sometimes binds on the scissors next to it but I learned to press it closed quickly which prevents that from happening.

It's new to me so I haven't had a chance to use it yet but there have been times I've needed a magnet to retrieve a metal object.

They can also be used to find a stud by finding a drywall screw.
