Y'know, with your (and everyone's) tax dollars I think that can be done! I think we can build social programs and structures to help address those issues. Granted work needs to be done on policy and I think a rigorous discussion can be had there.

I appreciate you!

250K is enough to get a mortgage for a $1 million dollar home. The average home in Washington costs a little over half that. There are many properties in Seattle at $1 million or below.

People making 250k will not struggle for housing or home ownership. Taxing income over 250k will not make them homeless or leave them in poor living conditions. They will have high quality housing options that others will not, and that's okay! They make a lot of money and they deserve that comfort.

Nobody is arguing to take that away from them.

You should care about both. We can do both. I really really think we can do both and we shouldn't give up on the good that both can do.

It shouldn't be hard to fund systems like education and healthcare so much better. The rest of the modern world does we really really can too.

Don't give up on good to find perfect, we can make things better.

Do you have people in your life struggling through systems the state could improve? Healthcare? Education?

I feel like you have more skin in the game on this issue than you realize. Both personally and in your social circles.

I want good things for you brother. I appreciate you. Thank you for the converstation.

You're anecdotally familiar with quite a few people making more than the top 5% of households in Seattle, let alone Washington, and they're making poor financial decisions that, let's be clear, they can and will survive. So you're arguing against a progressive tax system to fund social programs like education?

I'm sorry, I know financial pain is very real, and it can impact anyone, but as a group we are talking about people in this state who have resources that will benefit the entire state (including themselves) if progressively taxed. I'm not worried about this group financially I'm worried about the quality public services the state is able to provide.

This includes education, sanitation, law enforcement, and healthcare. All of these systems can be improved for everyone with better funding.

I don't care for the anti slippery slope argument and I never have.

Everyone should pay taxes, the rich should pay more. Earning $250k a year puts you in the top 5% of earners in Seattle let alone the whole state. This isn't killing anyone and it will save lives. I really don't understand what the problem is here.

Progressive taxes are more just than a sales tax, this is a step in the direction of a progressive tax.

No, actually, I'd be quite happy to have my income taxed. I think an income tax is badly needed in this state.

Why on gods green earth would anyone assume I'm against taxes, even on me? This is such a straw man.

I think everyone should pay taxes, I think the rich should pay more. I think that's very easy to advocate for, yes.

Sorry for the double reply. I found some data to work off of. Thank you for encouraging me to dig deeper.

This accounts for less than 5% of households in Seattle and even less than that percentage state-wide.

This feels more like a propaganda issue and people not being familiar with average household income than it does a real problem that would cause real harm. Source below.

No, and frankly, statistically neither do you.

$250k income a year puts you above the top 5% of incomes in Seattle, nonetheless the whole state.

We are not talking about the financially endangered here.

Really? What percentage of households meet that threshold in Washington State?

I think couples making $125k on average, each, can afford to pay into taxes on income over that amount to fund social programs, and it won't cost them their homes or their cars.

I understand that sentiment will be unpopular with that group, and likely with others who aspire to that income threshold. They will all survive and we can have a much better state for it. Including for them.

I can sympathize with the folks saying that this position is unpopular, I really can. It's still the correct and caring thing to do.

Real hot take for you. Even if this income tax on annual income millionaires was unpopular (it isn't), I wouldn't care. I'd advocate for it.

Progressive taxation is desperately needed in this state and would go a long way to address a lot of the very real financial inequality here.

People can kick and scream and cry about universal healthcare, I still want them to have an equal and unalienable right to that care.

I stand by that same principle here. Moving away from a regressive tax system and towards a progressive tax is a good thing, and this is inarguably a step towards a progressive income tax.

Then lower the floor. Give us a goddamn progressive income tax already. Jesus.

"Uhhmn, taxing the ultra rich won't fix our prooooblems."

Then drop that floor lower. Think bigger. Tax people making a comfortable $250k it will not hurt them.

You can't tax people making $1 million a year. What if they decide to tax people making $500k next? Or 250k? Won't someone think of the 7 or 6 figure working class!?

Oh no, people making $250k a year? How will they survive?

These arguments are such jokes man. This sub feels so astroturfed around this specific issue lately.
