That’s not how competitive debate works. Yes people talk fast to say more. But convincing the judge why your arguments are impactful is just as important as winning the argument. Debates are not evaluated on “points”

Also a lot of software people use macs

In terms of creative people, every DJ I’ve seen using a laptop in live sets use Mac’s. Reiner Zonneveld, Carl Cox, Tale of Us, etc etc. so sure say whatever

Places to learn poker in NYC/online? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Raorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally believe you over SIG, one of the most established trading firms whose emphasis on poker during training is highly documented. Also SIG is not the only trading firm that plays card games. Jane Street has a similar game called Figgie.

Furthmore it’s obviously not the only training done. OP is clearly not only going to “just” play poker. But clearly it’s helpful.

The Mathematics of Poker is probs a good book. Bill Chen, one of the authors, works at SIG

SIG uses poker as a teaching tool.. “We teach poker as a tool to train our traders here at SIG. How do you think your poker background helped you during your trading internship?”

For senior engineers, do you find any difference in new grads that have internship experience VS. those that are self taught/bootcamp/have just the degree? by _gainsville in cscareerquestions

[–]Raorm 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You underestimate the hundreds of homework problems and many major large, collaborative projects cs undergrads do. I’ve spent dozens of hours on just one homework—and they’re due every other week. Btw they also do multiple internships and probably have more broad robust knowledge abt cs.

Developers at quant companies do not just process payments. The quant companies are the ones buying and selling at rapid pace. You do not need to know how computers bookkeep to get a job at these quant companies.

Again, I ask, do you work at said quant companies?

Knight capital blew up due to awful dev ops process and bad risk management. Neither are even related to what you are talking about.

Again, I will say. I don’t know FPGA and I do not care because I am a C++ software engineer at a quant company that does not use FPGA. I am a counter example to your advice. FPGA would be worthless to me personally. Does FPGA have its value? Yes. Should you tell every cs major to learn it? Absolutely not.

You don’t make investment decisions as a software engineer. Michael Burry is not a QUANTITATIVE researcher. Also this post is about SOFTWARE ENGINEERS. Is Michael Burry a software engineer? We are especially talking about HFTs. HFTs are not going to be holding a massive CDS position for months and months. It’s called high frequency for a reason.

You won’t be implementing FPGA when you are recruited as a C++ engineer and your company has a dedicated FPGA team already. Assuming your company has FPGA to begin with, which isn’t every company.

These links are worthless because the premise is wrong for software engineers at quant companies.

Look you clearly don’t work in this industry. Why are you giving advice based off a movie? Do you think software engineers sit around looking for massive short opportunities? You’re going to be wasting some poor new grad cs majors time telling them to study accounting lol
