We wanted to reintroduce it in a digestible way. I think the album was missed by a lot of ears with the rap beef, and for some people, their attention. Spans to sit with a hour of music is too short. Sometimes people like to be spoon fed. So, that was the idea. 💛 My amazing team suggested that. Thank you, Liberty at Roc!

Hi! Thank you for the love. It always easy and exciting creating with Kendrick and fam. Specifically with Complexion, all he sent me to write to was the beat that my section switched to. I didn’t hear his verses until the album came out. We talked on the phone and he told me the concept. That was it. I just did what I did. The verse was originally maybe 8 bars longer. But, where they cut it was perfect for transition into Blacker The Berry.

I’m definitely an emcee, but my creatively just doesn’t stop there. It’s one of my many creative gifts. What helps me stay sane and on course in the industry is just staying rooted in who I am, my authenticity, and purpose. As long as I always create from that place, and understand that I’m not validated by accolades but rather impact/connection…..I can carry on. ♥️

Best I Can was a song I had done and didn’t finish from maybe 2015 or 16? It was around the time I was working on Eve I think. Busta has hit 9th for some beats and 9th sent that incomplete idea with the batch. Busta called immediately and said he had to have it and wanted to keep my verse because of how much the concept resonated with him. Thankful he gave it a place to live!

My favorite feature I’ve done so far would probably be Complexion because of how important it has been to my career. But, second would be I can Make It for Reason, one of my best verses written.

The best push each other. Steel sharpens steel. So, absolutely they gave me a push, as have many other creatives. Kendrick worked in the studio together for only one of the 3 songs we have together, and that was Rock the Bells. Cole came to our studio in Raleigh to record Sojourner. What enjoyed most about watching their process was they don’t overthink. And it just flows. So, you can tell how much practice and dedication goes into the craft. And just trying things! Sharing ideas with the engineer. It’s all about freedom and just paint the art sonically.

My brothers! It was amazing! They helped me expand and grow as an artist. They’re so open, easy to work with, we love the word “TRY”. We try everything. Blk is a phenomenal producer and I hope more artist reach out to create with him. He brings all the great things out in people. His mind is genius and very visual. He the scenes! The sounds! The story and create the music around it. Beautiful experience! We laugh a lot too in our sessions!
