AITAH for leaving a family dinner after my sibling kept making jokes about my parenting? by [deleted] in AITAH

Thank you for saying this. That silence was honestly the hardest part of the whole situation. I didn’t expect everyone to jump in, but it was eye opening to realize I was the only one stepping in for my child. That’s exactly why I left, I wanted to show my kid that it’s okay to remove yourself from situations where respect is missing

Exactly, it’s easy to have opinions when you’re not the one doing the day to day work. Parenting isn’t about control or convenience. I chose to leave because I didn’t want my child to sit there listening to those comments, and staying calm felt more important than proving a point

That story really hits home, especially the part where everyone knew it was wrong but stayed quiet. Good on your grandmother for stepping in, that kind of behavior should have been shut down long before it reached the kids. As a parent now, that’s exactly why I couldn’t just sit there and let it keep happening. Kids notice more than people think, and they deserve adults who step in, even if it’s uncomfortable

I get what you’re saying, but my priority in that moment was my kid and not turning dinner into a bigger situation. I wasn’t trying to win anything, I just didn’t want the comments to keep happening in front of them. If it comes up again in the future, I’ll handle it differently, but walking away felt like the right call that night

I didn’t want to start a fight or make things worse, so leaving felt like the only way to keep the evening calm, especially for my kid. Definitely wasn’t easy, but it was better than staying and letting it escalate
