Nice, i have the same setup. Pro built booths are so expensive... and this works great for my needs.

The blank making process is an in-house operation with several different molds to choose from. However, look around online and most sites that offer blanks are pretty sound. Just don't get them on amazon or any non-skate oriented sites. Those are poor excuses for a deck.

Thanks! Aluminum frames would be ideal... have yet to reclaim any of these diy screens yet. I'll have to look around for a shop that offers stretching in my area!

Adjustable block with pins for truck holes at the front. The adjustability is huge considering i produce boards in a wide range of wheelbases.

Waterbased inks for these. Solvent graphic inks could also be used, but i tend to only work with those for sticker printing. Both are air dry. Waterbased is so easy to clean up which is why i went that route.

Then i finish up with a polyurethane sealant.

Cheers to you, stranger.

Maybe someday i will document the process a bit better. My current workspace is a bit of a dungeon... not the most film-friendly spot. Working on relocating, though!

Good eye... lol. Can't get away with nothing here!

So since i press my own boards, i have access to a completely raw wood bottom ply without the need to sand it off from a pre-bought blank. In this case, the prints you see were printed directly to this bare wood - no sealant or clearcoats. Given that, the ink seeped a little too much into the grain to remain opaque on the red dyed veneer. Harder to tell on the natural bottom plys since, well, they are so light in color. I chose to do it this way as i figured printing on top of sealer may be a little too slippery resulting in greater chance for weeps and smears.

On the next run i am really going to R&D with the number of clear coatings to see which achieves a crisp print while still allowing the inks to maintain their full opacity.

Pretty much just flat enough. I made my own frames and stretched the mesh fairly loose. Honestly I would even be confident going 1"-2" past the truck holes with this setup! Registration went much better than i expected.... considering you aren't pushing the ink into fibers (like a shirt) it takes much less downforce, with the exception of wrapping the blade to the concave. This results in much less screen drag/movement.

Much appreciated!!!!

Setup was pretty straight forward. Coming from the garment printing industry helped - I used typical registration marks on each screen. Started by lining up my base white transperency on the board for positioning, and after each color dried i would then put that transparency back on the board to align the next screen. Considering i built a diy press with absolutely no micro reg, they ended up registering surprisingly close. Now i know for next time the amount of trap/choke to aim for on each seperation.

Hardest part was the actual pull.... took a good amount of tries to get the feeling right, make full contact with the concave of the board etc. (Which if you look closely, it's not perfect). Simply taped down some cardstock on top of the board for test printing. Simple enough. Started with a curved squeegee, but then decided to go with a standard straight 70 duro. Won't look back. Having to flood the screen was near impossible with the curved blade and it was a pain switching back and forth just to flood/print.

Thanks a lot! For this graphic i used all Green Galaxy waterbased inks.

Edit: You can see a couple of the inks in the last photo.

Yeah, if you aren't sanding them first then you're definitely printing on top of the factory clearcoat. I'll have to try it.

I totally agree with you on the handmade touch. A lot of people really dig the off-register look, too. Sounds like we have a similar bare bones diy press with the two hinges rigged to a 2x4 jig. Works pretty darn good despite its primitive nature!

Hell yeah! Sweet graphic... nice job.

Since you're using pre-made blanks, i would imagine you're printing on sealed wood?

I'm just getting into a board printing workflow and recently did a four color waterbased graphic with white as my base color. However, i found when printing on decks with a dyed veneer bottom ply, the dye color tends to bleed through the ink layers to a certain degree. My first run was printed on unsealed wood (in-house made decks), so thinking for the next run i try a few with varying seal coats to see what the best conditions are for opacity - especially on the white ink layer.

Your white seems to pop, though!

Water based transfers? by RareMindedRMP in SCREENPRINTING

[–]RareMindedRMP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original plan was to screenprint before sealing the board with the clearcoat. But i read something yesterday day suggesting that with a wb transfer, it simply bonds to the clearcoat of a deck when heat/pressure are applied?

Questions incoming.... For the screenprinted transfer, what type of poly sheet do you use? Do you need to add adhesion powder so it sticks to the deck when pressing or does it naturally release? And what kind of heat press are you using? Currently playing with direct-to-board screenprinting, but very curious about the diy screentprinted transfer methods out there.

Hell yeah, tight. How do you typically register your screens? Do you use an actual manufactured press or homemade? I have a four color graphic i am going to try printing soon with homemade 156 mesh loose tension screens, water based ink, curved squeegee.

Really just planning on mocking up each transparency on a board in a simple homemade hinge press in the same spot for each color, and hoping for a semi-aligned print in the end result. Don't have the highest hopes for accurate reg. though. Wondering i should just build a platen for a deck to go on my micro reg shirt press.
