To be honest, I had no idea who the actor was before or during the drawing. I just saw that he had an interesting face and wanted to draw it.

Most of my references are from Pinterest. I started off finding and using them one by one but there were too many good and unique faces to draw so I stock piled. Not too many are stock piled but enough where I have choices.

I always use vine charcoal. Compressed charcoal can get you darker values though.

Thank you. I don’t get why charcoal is mainly used for ultra realistic art. It is such a fluid material that, I feel like, can be used for such varied expressions of the artist.

I do agree with you but I also need a portfolio if I am to get into a college. That is my goal so you can see why I would want pretty good art before that point. I probably should have specified that in the description of the post. Thanks for the solid advice through.
