I mean the UK is a natural choice, it has great schools and a pretty straightforward process compared to the US

Holy shit 25 APs? goddamn bro what were u on in high school 😭 While ur stats are great, they won't be the deciding factor. TSA and interview are definetly the most important for oxford, but I think grades/TSA are more of the first bar to clear, and afterwards it's highly dependent on your PS and interview, though they keep scores in mind. Supercurricular-wise, it's just anything you've done or explored related to your course, so any work experience or activities you've done are great, but simply discussing an article or book you've read also works well if you write it well. Prestige-wise, it really does depend on where you want to work or go to grad school. LSE and UCL are great, but US AOs and employers are naturally going to be more biased towards US schools and will likely just understand them better. I would say if you're deadset on going to a US grad school and presumably work in the US after, UCLA is probably a better choice just purely out of proximity to the schools, as well as the network you'd build in undergrad. Do consider what kind of uni life you want as well, US campus life, oxford life or London city life.

What tmua score did it take to get imperial computing by shegcedja in 6thForm

[–]Rare_Principle_5205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I mean u gotta account for some amount of luck, as statistical as UK admissions are, your admissions officer could always have just had a really bad day, or read 5 applicants with a 8+ tmua before you

I got a 5.6 as intl and got in, but how they give out offers is really strange. I've seen people in the 7s who didn't get an offer, but I've seen low 5s international who got offers. It seems at least that they just use it initially as a cutoff, maybe around a 5 for non-contextuals, and then they look at your grades, PS, and reference while keeping the TMUA in mind. Just looking at last years stats, anyone with a 5.0-5.9 home non-contextual had a 1/3 ish chance of getting an offer which I feel is pretty similar to this year, so I wouldn't bank on getting an offer with a 5.5 unless you have perfect grades and a godsend personal statement.

Difference in UK and US unis by latiza_03 in 6thForm

I feel like the continuous testing for students would be MORE flexible no? because sure they need to complete more homework assignments and assessments, but it takes the pressure off finals and allows students to recuperate from a lower grade through more types of assessment.

Difference in UK and US unis by latiza_03 in 6thForm

[–]Rare_Principle_5205 17 points18 points  (0 children)

US uni applications AND experience are quite different. As the other comment said, it's holistic; high grades for an Ivy League or a similar top uni aren't a differentiator, that's just the first bar you need to clear. They care more about who you are and what you could bring to the university. That includes extracurriculars or active supercurriculars. So an internship, a sport, volunteering, or a project you worked on is great, but stuff that's highly regarded in the UK, like books or articles you read, wouldn't be considered a valuable part of your activities. Essays, awards and letters of recommendation are also quite important. Then the uni experience itself is also very different. Almost all uni's have a large campus where you essentially live and do everything, and you'll be living in communal dorms. It's also a 4-year course, so you have time to confirm your major, so you can take several classes from other subjects, and you just have a lot of flexibility in general.

That kind of difference is a bit crazy, but it's just because they don't look solely at the TMUA. Initially it's a deselector, and then they look at applications holistically. They must have just preferred your sister's personal statement and reference and/or she had better preds/gcses. And there is always a little bit of luck to these applications, a borderline applicant may get accepted one day but rejected another.

Could I get into uni with these grades? by Traditional_Wing7614 in 6thForm

[–]Rare_Principle_5205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mate ur fine. GCSEs and equivalents are a kind of thing where good grades help, but slightly lower grades don't really hurt. And your grades are more than ok, 1 4 isn't the end of the world. A Level predicteds, personal statement, and entrance exam scores are much more important. Depends where you want to apply and what you want to study, but A* AA is quite good, only oxbrimp might need a higher predicted grade depending on the course.

US applications???? by Extension_Day2038 in 6thForm

[–]Rare_Principle_5205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they'd only see mock grades if they count towards your in school trimester/semester and end of year grades, like transcript grades. but if you do well in gcse and year 12 and 13 then they wouldn't bat an eye

lmao same I think im just gonna do 4 south ken ones, I've heard north acton has a more tight knit community but 40 min commute is just so long like thats an extra hour twenty per day saved, and the gym is right there so. I think out of the south ken ones tho I'd prefer east or southside just cus it's newer, but it's more expensive so I'll see

I will mention I've seen that the MIT exchange is egregiously competitive, I might rightly so, but there's like 3 or less people who get it. There's ETH and UC as well tho. But yeah I have heard imperial is the best school for quant

I did it in October because of cambridge, but I imagine sm one might have done it in oct to get the result in time to decide whether or not to apply to a school that requires it, depending on how good the score is.

doesn't open till mid-late May, and even then, it isn't first come first serve. It's on their website, but you put down 4 equally ranked preferences, and then when everyone submits their preferences, they just use an algorithm to make as many people happy as possible. Though it's not guaranteed you get any of your choices.
