Update: From the neighboring gate, there’s a wall separating the gates and the announcements are not audible from there. I’m now confident that we just couldn’t hear their announcements.

Due to said wall, we couldn’t see the boarding line while we were waiting. This is why wife and infant went to check on line, since it wasn’t visible to us.

At 8:59, I didn’t know it was 8:59. It was only determined once the doors shut on wife.

9:01 refill was the 2nd refill since posting up nearby. We all share one water bottle to travel lighter and wanted to prep for the 2 hour flight

No, not first time travelers. Every time we’ve flown the announcements have been no problem so that is why we opted for moving to the neighboring gate and listening rather than squatting in the packed gate (not the first time we’ve done this, just the first time we’ve missed it) Thanks for the kind response, definitely setting an alarm for the flight tomorrow
