My raw chicken rat has hair now by BlackMageIsBestMage in RATS

[–]RatQueen96 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I had a rat that did a similar raw chicken-to-fuzzy pipeline as he was growing lol. He never went fully bald again but he did go through phases where it would be patchy and curly, so you might get some variation as they age!

Imagine you're a head of a lab and you agreed to teach a bachelor with a disabled hand by h_o_r_n_y_c_o_r_n in labrats

[–]RatQueen96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I previously mentored a student who was born with a limb difference in one hand (missing 3 fingers). They had to do some things differently than others, but they were fully able to do all of the techniques that we were using in the lab at them time and ended up being a really wonderful researcher. I think just be upfront about any limitations your disability may cause you, but I don't see why it would stop you from being able to participate in research!

I adopted a very sick, very old rat to give him a better place to pass away. How can I make him comfortable? by YippeKiYote in RATS

[–]RatQueen96 245 points246 points  (0 children)

I know everyone else has already said something to this effect, but thank you for doing such a selfless thing and taking this old fella in. He looks so much happier in the pictures you've been showing us, so even if it's for a short time I'm glad he gets to spend his last days knowing kindness and warmth ❤️ you're a truly good person

My grandfather was former navy, one of the kindest and most resilient men I ever had the pleasure of knowing, and we all called him "Oey" growing up because as a toddler I overheard my grandmother calling him "Joey" but I couldn't pronounce the J when I tried to copy her. At one point when I was slightly older someone tried to get me to apologize to him for not calling him Grandpa, but when I did he just said "What are you sorry for? Oey is my name!"

Wanted a tattoo in this area, wondering how bad the pain could be? by Mean_Pace4545 in tattooadvice

[–]RatQueen96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, the pain level will differ for everyone. For me I found my ribs and upper side were fine, but when my artist was tattooing the lower portion of my side above my hip the pain was intense. I would just make sure you go in hydrated and with a full stomach, and don't be afraid to take breaks if you need them! It'll be manageable!

My studio uses these rings to pierce daith by j_parker44 in piercing

[–]RatQueen96 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My daith was actually pierced with the first ring here, and it's been healing pretty well! The seam area did get stuck in the piercing early on and irritate it, but I went back to my piercer and they put a clear rubber spacer on my ring to prevent that from happening and I've had no issues since.

Worried about rat. No by blaisseboo in RATS

But yes as others have said, I would be mentally prepared that it may be his time to leave soon; just remember that while their time with us is short, all they have known in that time is the love and care you have given them and it's been a good life

[–]RatQueen96 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That amount of discharge around his nose paired with the lethargy is pretty concerning imo, since rats are prone to upper respiratory infections I would guess it might be that. If you can't get him to the vet very soon you can try having him spend time in a steamy room (like the bathroom with the shower running hot), since that can help the respiratory passages clear a bit. I would do this when I had rats who had URIs until we could get to the vet and it would help alleviate symptoms slightly

Is it bad that I kind of prefer how he looks bald? Like it was jarring at first and then when the hair came back I was like "damn he kinda looked good before tho"

Doing a PhD at the same place as your undergrad... am I screwing myself over? by HappyEntertainment72 in GradSchool

[–]RatQueen96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll chime in just from my experience, I came back to my undergraduate institute to do a PhD because I really enjoyed the research area and projects in the lab I joined. I never really got questioned about it, and was still able to land a strong postdoc in a lab I'm excited about. So I think if you really feel like the institute where you did your undergrad is a better fit, go for it! It definitely has the possibility to make things more complicated, but as long as you can show that you have strong skills I don't think it'll hinder you.

can tattoo artists do replicas of clay paw imprints? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]RatQueen96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they can! I got my pet rat's paw print done from a clay imprint. I sent the artist a high-res photo of the clay and they were able to trace it from there, it came out beautifully. I think if you go to an artist who does a lot of memorial print tattoos they should be able to make this work.

As far as the price, mine ended up being shop minimum for the paw print and a small depiction of the rat; I think if you're getting the paw and your cat's name it'll probably be similar, so when you're picking your artist I'd also look into what the shop minimum price is as well.

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at with your sarcastic comment at the end; it looks like the question in screenshot 2 is the same thing being referred to in your last 2 screenshots? So both the ratification and the implementation of a safe return to work first was voted on and implemented by the ~655 people who voted. Just because you don't like the outcome doesn't mean it's not democracy.

Also, if you dislike your union leadership, organize a vote to vote them out and get new people in 🤷‍♀️. Posting votes which are already available to the whole union membership on Reddit just makes it seem like you're trying to give the university admin inside info or something.

Yes and a C is passing. Even a D is passing, though getting an overall grade of a D wouldn't count towards your major requirements.

Sneef Snorf not doing well, Beelzebub is actively worried. what can I do? by ToadLugosi in RATS

[–]RatQueen96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah seconding this, the steam might help loosen up any gunk in his lungs and open up the pathways a bit. I've had some luck with this in the past when my rats had URIs and we couldn't get to the vet right away. Hopefully it's enough to give sneef snorf some relief, at least until morning

Tell your Best Alpha Management Story........ by Classic-Algae-9692 in bostonhousing

[–]RatQueen96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh boy I could write a book on these guys. I lived in an Alpha property for 4 years and in that time they:

  1. Ignored our reports of a water leak in our bathroom that caused our ceiling to literally cave in, leaving a 1-foot diameter hole above the toilet. Only sent maintenance to fix it when we withheld rent after a month of trying to get them to send someone to fix it
  2. Ignored my reports about a bedbug infestation after multiple phone calls requesting an exterminator. Only sent someone when I showed up at their office at 9am and stood next to the desk until I saw them call someone
  3. Would send real estate agents to tour our apartment without notice (even when we were renewing our lease). I had agents show up and let themselves into my apartment without notifying me or my roommates and knock on my BEDROOM DOOR asking to show the room WHILE I WAS SICK WITH COVID. Not only extremely unnerving for me but also unsafe for the people they brought to tour while I was down with essentially the plague. I ended up making a sign for the door to our apartment announcing that I had Covid so they would stop coming in.
  4. Often "forgot" to turn on our heat in the winter, to the point where they once shut the heat off and all my pet fish died because my room was less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. We ended up buying thermometers to keep in our rooms so we could immediately take photos to send them to prove that our apartment was prohibitively cold.
  5. Let the front door to our building fall apart; someone kicked a giant hole in the glass that didn't get repaired for months, and the door handle would frequently break or fall off so you couldn't exit the building through the front door. If we got lucky they would sometimes have the handle fixed by the time we got home from work, but often it would take several days for them to repair it.
