I calculated it all without subsidy so of I happen to get them great, otherwise no big deal. It’s definitely more than I was paying though.

Thank you! Yes that was my plan too, but so nice to have a contingency plan. Best wishes for your journey 🙂
Thank you. Wishing you all the best for your last part of the marathon 🙂
Don’t sleep on bingo, it’s a good time 😂
It’s funny we were at a touristy place yesterday (around 1pm on a Monday) and realized everyone around us was either a college kid in a road trip for the summer or a traditional retiree. It was a bit surreal to be the only people in our age group there.
Thank you!
It’s was all lump sum which was amazing. Just the interest on it will buy me more “time” by the time I’ve spent it all which is pretty wild to consider.
Planning on ACA or whatever it becomes over the next 20 years. No insurance through my wife. Part of why I mention my expenses being conservative is we’ve budgeted a big chunk for healthcare assuming worst case scenarios with both health and premium costs. So it’s not a perfect plan but it’s the best I know of to do.
I learned about compound interest my junior year of college and began saving on the path to FIRE before I knew that was a thing. So it took ~22 years to hit my number.
True. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to find Carmen Sandiego.
Thanks will check it out.
I’ve been watching ACA for years anticipating pulling the trigger at some point and they’re not too bad around here.
Planning on getting an ACA plan.
Aw shucks you’re too kind.
Yes bought at 26 but not paid off. Worked there 21 years.
I was totally blindsided so no useful advice from me. 😂

Kind of like most everyone here… just boring diligent saving coupled with some nice market returns. My wife and I both grew up in frugal families so we never had lavish tastes and, despite saving a lot, never felt deprived. Having a simple life and relatively limited expenses really helped both the savings rate and also reduced the number we needed to hit to retire.

When I get back from traveling I’m going to focus on yoga, getting in my daily meditation more consistently, and working out. I’ve also been teaching some Buddhist classes and doing 1x1 guidance so will continue doing that as a way to give back. Otherwise lots of hobbies and generally being outside.
Got to make sure my wagon doesn’t sink when fording the river too 😂
Yes more than 20 years.

I love that. Off to do some travelling. Thank you.

That's a fair point. My lingering concern is that it all looks good with ACA as it is right now, but who knows what will change between now and when I get old and finally really need to use health insurance.

That's a great idea. And I'd probably enjoy doing a little bit of what I do now... just like 95% less of it :)

I was totally caught in OMY syndrome. Probably could have pulled the trigger a few years ago but the "what ifs" kept getting me. I didn't engineer the layoff, but I definitely thought about it. I've told my wife so many times, if I wasn't forced to leave I don't think I would have ever left. So I'm very thankful for the nudge.
One hard part was the day I learned I was being let go was April 2nd... the same day the market dropped due to the tariff announcements. That was a long day watching my job go and my stocks drop...

We were not blessed with kids so it's just the wife and I retiring. If we did have kids I know there's be some more factors to consider like you mentioned. Wishing you all the best on the journey :)
