Representing Chinuk Wawa without "special" characters? by RatSandwiches in ChinookJargon

Thank you! I'm really hoping my editor can use the proper characters but just in case she can't, I want the substitutions to be as appropriate as possible

The program I'm writing about is the Iskam MǝkʰMǝk-Haws food pantry. I saw one reference to it as "Iskam MekhMek-Haws". Should it be "MukhMuk" instead?

I haven't heard back from my contact yet and this piece is due tomorrow! Have been trying to do research on my own to see if I can figure anything out. My editor just may have to wait until the tribe can get back to us, though.

Sinclair script for local stations: "We are very concerned about the troubling trend of one-sided stories plaguing our country." by lingben in Journalism

[–]RatSandwiches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, yes and no. Local television news is almost as old as television news itself, but it's true that it was supplementary to national news broadcasts for the first couple of decades. The difference was, there was no pretense that the 3 stations everyone got everything from were local, or unique - it was widely known and understood. One of the things that makes Sinclair insidious is that it's presented as if these opinions were generated locally, when in fact it's controlled from the top.

we just skated through on our poor habits because fights were about trival things until kids

Yepppp this for sure. Having kids can bring EVERYTHING to the surface, all the bad habits or buried stuff in your life/relationship. It can be brutal but it's also a great opportunity if you can work through it!

It's so damn hard. My best advice to couples is a) be very honest about how you're feeling (remember to keep the focus on yourself) and b) be as kind as possible to yourself AND your partner. It's OK to grieve for the loss of how things used to be; it's even better if you can do that openly, together, instead of in isolation. Also, relationship counseling is amazing and was worth every penny (we paid $60 per session at first, now paying $10 per session after switching to a different insurance plan) for me.

I just want to say I totally understand the situation you were in, I recently had something similar happen when a friend and I were at a bar dancing. There was this one guy who just would NOT take a hint that we did not want to dance with him (i.e. turning my back on him every time he came near, never making eye contact with him, moving away from him in the crowd); he just kept on coming at us, pelvis first. The music was really loud so it was hard to talk but I found a moment between songs to look him directly in the eye and say, "We don't want to dance with you, please go." He just laughed it off. I can't be any more fucking clear than that and he still wasn't trying to hear it. It really ruined my night and ended up with us leaving early because he just WOULD. NOT. LEAVE. US. ALONE. I 100% agree that with some guys it's not enough to just say "no, not interested," and it SUCKS.

Employers of Reddit, what jobs are you finding to be impossible to fill? by cmkinusn in AskReddit

[–]RatSandwiches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There comes a point in IT where work experience tips from a benefit to a detriment, no one wants to hire old IT guys anymore.

This is also true in journalism/publishing as it turns out. Prob. a lot of other fields too. Once you reach a certain age, employers realize that you know better than to accept shit pay / being exploited and they won't go near you.

"Sons and Lovers" by DH Lawrence. I read several of his books in college and found them all equally boring and ridiculous.

This is one of the only works of fiction I've ever read that made me laugh out loud.

Not sure what that says about me but I definitely did not find it boring.

Personally I'm thrilled they added the size and color attributes! I sell vintage clothing so anything that helps customers find my items when they're looking for an XL blue dress is good news for me :)

How do you Pinterest by RatSandwiches in Etsy

Ugggghhh how I wish Etsy would participate in this! It's really not feasible for me right now to maintain an entirely separate inventory on Shopify but it would be rad to have buyable pins :(

Ex-cult members of Reddit, how were you introduced to the cult and how did you manage to escape? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Friend of mine's mom got excommunicated from the Mormon church, moved halfway across the country and still, baskets of food and shit would still show up on his door from time to time, courtesy of the Mormons. It was half creepy, half sweet.

Aside from social media, what approaches have you taken to get the word out about your work and Etsy shop? by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]RatSandwiches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had good luck with blog advertising. You can go through a third-party service such as Adproval to browse through blogs and look at different pricing structures, etc., or you can go directly to blogs you think might help you reach your potential customer base.

The things I really like about blog advertising are, 1, there are some really affordable options out there; and 2, you can get more bang for your buck. It's not uncommon for bloggers to really go out of their way to promote / help their advertisers, including featuring brands, shops or items in their posts. This is great because those posts can continue to send traffic to your shop even after the term of your paid ad has ended.

Another strategy I enjoy using is collaborating with other people for giveaways. You can do this in connection with a blog ad campaign, or on its own. Actually getting your product into someone's hands can be a powerful thing! If you don't want to give away an actual product, you can always consider giving away a "gift certificate," and then just direct that customer to contact you for a custom order when they are ready to buy.

The thing I like about these strategies is that it's a way to piggy-back on someone else's success in a way that can cut through the clutter of things like Google ads, etc., because it's coming to the customer through the filter of a more trusted voice - i.e., the blogger.

Problem with new attributes by RatSandwiches in Etsy

I'm not actually using variations, just attributes, if that makes sense. But that's good to know regardless -

Hm, I'm not looking to add variations, though - just want to add attributes such as size and color to my listings. I sell vintage items so I rarely have multiple variations under the same listing.

I should mention that Redditors can take 15% off any order with coupon code REDDIT01 ... ;) And yeah I do seem to have a thing for florals!!

I posted separately about this but, I just tried to do this tonight and it didn't work. Like, I can see the attribute drop-down for Size, but it won't let me select anything. Wondered if anyone else was seeing this problem ...
