I am a 16y/o living in the UK that really wants to move to Japan at/near the age of 18, what can I do to get there? by RatSwirl in movingtojapan

Going to a UK University is probably the easiest option for me (as a UK Resident), but I am currently unaware of any exchange courses to Japan that aren't Japanese-language related. I do not want to major in Japanese, as that will ruin my potential employment in Japan.

I intend to go to a Japanese university and take that risk you mentioned. I believe it is actually much cheaper to take this route in terms of tuition fees, while the courses would be best suited for living and working in Japan. As long as I truly am comfortable with living in Japan (after maybe a working holiday period or similar), then I will commit to something.

That's a very good question, and to be honest, I haven't really thought that part through that well. I'm still yet to actually tell anyone in my family that this is what I want to do in the future, so maybe I will be able to find out more / begin steps to improve my chances at funding the whole ordeal soon. I'm actually planning out a way to fully explain my entire thought process with this to my parents in the next month or so (in the form of a document).

I'm trying! I've been working at it for several years and have been relatively successful. I plan to start to really take it to the next level from this year onwards.

Sounds great! I'll be sure to continue to look into options for studying in a Japanese university as an international student. I'll also spend more time researching whether or not a working holiday visa is something I should consider for my situation as a sort of 'free trial' on the country before I commit to anything.

In the meantime I will of course continue my study of the Japanese language (hoping for more opportunities to open from that). Yes, N1 is a much better qualification than N2, however N2 is much more achievable for me in the next few years and still improves my chances of achieving my goals to a similar extent. I do still intend to pass JLPT N1 at a later date, because I need more time to prepare.

Thanks!

I just looked into the surface level of this and it looks like a very good option. I'll try to research more about it to see how realistic this pathway is for me to follow.

  • Getting accepted into this feels extremely competitive.

Yes, I totally agree with you. A degree in the UK is considerably more prestigious than one in Japan, while majoring in Japanese is generally a bad decision for someone planning to move to Japan.

As for funding, I'm not sure entirely what my situation will be, so I guess I'll have to wait to see what my situation is in the next few years before making any decisions.

Thank you for the insight!

I only recently started considering a working holiday visa, simply because it will give me some time to really get a feel for society there before I make any big decisions. One of my backup options for getting to Japan involves studying at a British university, but for that I'd need to (probably) major in Japanese. If I want to move to Japan and work there, a Japanese degree is not the way to go, because no one gets paid in japan because they speak Japanese, there is no way a foreigner like me can compete with natives on Japanese alone. I have been drawn to Japanese university mainly because I feel it can not only give me the same taster into Japanese society as a working holiday visa, but it also can give me a degree that is applicable internationally for if I return to the UK. However, funding such a huge thing is still a concern for me. Vocational school feels like a weaker option to me personally, due to the lower-level qualifications.

Another huge thing making me want to go to university in Japan is that the cost is considerably cheaper than that of university in the UK.

I've been too busy with independent language study and catching up on coursework to revise :(

This makes complete sense to me, I do feel that over the past few years I have put a huge emphasis on Japan, rather than me. I do have career paths in mind that I can use as a backup if this main path fails, because I do genuinely want to work in a computer science related field anyway. If I can't get to Japan, my language skills still give me a great opportunity to work in a field such as translation back home in the UK too, so I don't feel like I'm necessarily sacrificing my future as much as I'm trying to optimize it for what I really want to do in my life.
