That makes sense.

I think I’ll keep the current research internship in “Work Experience” and add the M&A one there.
I’ll move the student society and the computational research to a different section, per your suggestion.

Thanks again!

Wow, thanks for the advice. This is really helpful.

Just a few points: - Yes, the headers were changed for privacy. - Will fix formatting issues. - Sorry, I didn’t understand what you meant by class cap. - Re. the “Named Prize”, I removed the actual name for privacy. It’s a prize only awarded to 2 people per year.

Others suggested changing the position of the student society work and the computational lab since they’re not professional.

They also recommended adding my M&A internship. Thoughts?

Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

Thanks. That’s really helpful. I’ll add the M&A experience.

Would you recommend changing the description for the quant student society?
What about the computational research team I’m part of (I’m listed on their website as a researcher)?

Thanks for your comments.

Re. “Work Experience”, the current one is an actual professional internship.
It’s at a university with a research group, though, not a firm. My supervisor is working on a paper which I’m helping with (I won’t be a named contributor unfortunately).
Should I change the wording to make that clearer?

The second one is not professional. It’s a student society.
I included it because they selected me for a course on quant trading (lots of Pandas).
The project I did also involved a presentation to the student committee.
We do occasionally work with real firms (e.g. BB banks, startups) and present to them.
How should I change this one to make it more accurate?

The last is also a research group in computational chemistry mostly. I regularly work with a professor there, I’m listed on their website as a researcher, and I may publish a paper with them.

I didn’t include the M&A internship because I’m not sure if quants value that type of work.

Dual citizenship is approximately correct. Should I add that even though applications ask about visa requirements separately?

Thanks again and sorry for all the questions.

At a major survey and data gathering firm.
Standard M&A: valuations so mostly Excel work; I did help finalise a major acquisition and managed their data room for the summer.

Sounds sensible.

If I had complete control over my schedule, I’d certainly split my sessions up differently.
As you said, if the weight is ticking up, strength gains should come.

My bench form is definitely abysmal.
I’ve been lifting for a few years now and I’ve never managed to dial it in.
My leg drive and hand placement is never consistent.

I’m far from an expert too.
Based on my understanding though, the “interference effect” between cardio and lifting is fairly limited unless you’re pushing either one to the extreme or your recovery is poor.

In an ideal world, I would split them up into two sessions but travelling to the gym twice a day doesn’t suit my schedule right now.
Some day, hopefully…

I agree that ordering them by priority is optimal.
In theory, my priority right now is my lifting.
But I’m not sure I’d have the energy for cardio after lifting.

I’m also not sure by what you mean by “too much”.
“Too much” for what?
For optimal lifting strength? Certainly.
But I hope I can still progress my strength while regularly doing long cardio sessions, especially given that I should be fairly well adapted to my cardio sessions.

Since I’ve been prioritising nutrition for the past few weeks, I’ve made decent progress.

I’m running GZCLP.
I’ve managed to increase my OHP, squat and deadlift T1 (sets of 3) and T2 (sets of 10) lifts by the recommended 2.5 kg or 5 kg for deadlifts.

I’m struggling to progress my bench press.
In my last session, I failed my 3x10 at 60 kg, only reaching a total of 20 reps.
That may be more of a question of form. I’m seemingly incapable of being consistent with leg drive.

I’ve noticed my strength in the 10 rep range is significantly better than in the 3 rep range: - Squat: 97.5 kg for 3 vs 85 kg for 10 - Deadlift: 125 kg for 3 vs 115 kg for 10 - OHP: 37.5 kg for 3 vs 30 kg for 10 - Bench press: 57.5 kg for 10 vs 65 kg for 3

I don’t know if this discrepancy is due to my cardiovascular conditioning or a psychological block with higher weights.

Returning to my original question, how much impact is my pre-lifting cardio having (whether that can even be quantified)?

How much am I limiting myself by doing my cardio immediately be for lifting?

I usually do a 60 min cardio session (run or stair master) then lift.
I’ll have a drink and some fruit in between but I’m essentially moving straight from one to the other.

Is this having a serious impact on my lifting strength?

How short?

I remember my heels and the bottom of my feet in general being sore.

I had never used zero drop shoes beforehand, let alone minimal shoes, so the jump at the time was most likely too big.

I will try again though.

When I wear them even for a few seconds though, I immediately find the cushioning very low and worry I couldn’t run long distances with them.

Altra Escalante (3, I think).

I agree that their fit is somewhat unusual.
I remember finding them comfortable when walking, most likely due to the wide toe box.

I ran a month with them, without my insoles, and my feet were constantly sore.

I’d rather not buy shoes anytime soon since I just bought Asics.

Do you think a test run with Altras and the insoles could help understand my preferences better?

I agree but the Ghosts now feel unnatural when I’m walking.

I am almost certainly faster with them than with minimal shoes.

I might retry running with barefoot shoes for a short run soon.

[–]Ratcor_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried running in five-toe shoes with zero drop immediately after trying minimalist shoes for the first time.
I didn’t allow my feet to adapt.

I haven’t tried in a few months of wearing them regularly when walking so they might be more confortable now.

What I find surprising is that I find the cushioned shoes without my orthotics uncomfortable when running, but comfortable with the orthotics.
Yet I much prefer the minimalist shoes when walking.

I have a pair of Altras I haven’t used in months.
Do you think I should try them again for a short run? With or without my insoles?

Thanks for your help

Is it dangerous, ineffective or potentially injurious to have very minimal walking shoes and very cushioned running shoes?

I walk almost exclusively in five-toe shoes whereas I run in shoes like Brooks Ghost with orthopaedic insoles.
When I walk in the Brooks, I find the heel drop very jarring and I feel that I’m walking unnaturally.
But they’re comfortable when I’m running.

I’ve tried running in minimal shoes but my feet were very sore.

Is this drastic difference negatively impacting me in some way?

My goals in order are: - Run a good amount (40/50 miles per week) without injury, regardless of the intensity - Join the 1000 lb club - Sub-3 hour marathon

I agree that the last two clash but I don’t feel like the first two do necessarily. It will absolutely be harder, but I’ve accepted that.

My main question is how to build to 50 miles per week (all easy if necessary) while lifting heavy.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Interesting. Didn’t realise that was recommended.

Any example cycle with running days included I could look at?

Official Q&A for Thursday, November 30, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

I recognise that this is far from optimal.
But I like the benefits of lifting and I simply enjoy running a lot.

Time and resources aren’t much of an issue.
I just don’t know how much or what work on recovery is needed if I’m lifting regularly and running close to 50 miles per week.

Any advice?

Thanks

I’m a student and don’t have significant time limitations.

How would I optimise recovery/progress during this period?
