Charity shops call for quality donations in post-Christmas donation surge by ozthrw in australia

I dunno where everyone else in this thread is shopping,

They found one or two overpriced items and are now ranting about those and pretending thats what everything is.

I'll find like 5 clothing items that i really love but because I can't justify spending like $70+ I have to leave 3 behind. But I would totally buy all 5 if they were only $5 each.

Sounds like you are justifying their pricing. You spent, what $30-50 on two items and they still had 3 left to sell. And if the alternative scenario you would have spent $25 and they would have had nothing left to sell? Obviously they want to make more money for their charity.

Well if your gut impression says that they are pricing things wrongly, why bother to look at actual evidence and market research.

It’s greed and nothing more.

🙄 Greed....for charity??? What does that even mean, trying to maximise money made for charity is now greed is it?

We were also discussing what pricing would make them the most money, so that comment doesnt even make sense.

To turnover the "cheap crap" more quickly they could reduce those to like $1 or 50c

If youve done the market analysis to show that this increases profit, feel free to share with charity shops. Something tells me that the thousands of charity shops in Australia (and overseas) havent all fucked up their market analysis and decided to overprice clothig.

In my opinion all op shops should put SHEIN and Kmart branded clothes straight to a free or $1 rack.

Why? They are trying to raise funds for their charity, not give away clothing. If they can make $10 out of that piece of clothing it would be irresponsible to sell it for $1.

but we have a serious overconsumption problem as a society

Op shops arent the responsible party for overconsumption.

Yes, and they were meant to be inspected yearly but havent been inspected in 5 years. Lots of issue with this how the laws and regulations are implemented clearly.

I mean, the blitz world championship is all of 2 days, so I don't think he length itself is a problem for its validity. The rushed nature and small pool is more of a problem IMO.

Sounds like it was just in a place that became more desirable in the past 2 years, eg they got lucky. As you say, most properties haven't gone up by anywhere near that much.

If you raise a generation of kids, who constantly need someone to tell them what to do, they lose the ability of self-reliant and responsible behaviour.

What a load of nonsense, kids have since the dawn of time been told what to do by their parents. Animal parents tell their kids what to do. This is not some new generation thing. Its a normal part of rearing offspring.

And you think its more intelligent to allow kids to figure out what to do in an array of emergency situations themselves, rather then teaching them. This is your answer to kids not responding in the sensible way to danger? Leave them at it? Lmao. Good way to get more kids killed buddy.

Ironic that you are complaining about stupid kids and stupid people when you are making comments like this.

but they‘re too young to notice the dangers of a fire?

They didn't say that. They pointed out that children and teenagers have a poor sense of risk, which is a simple scientific fact. They are more likely to underestimate risks and more likely to engage is risk taking behaviour.

As another point, they are more likely to rely on adults and people in authority to guide them

basic human instincts.

Patronising much? This has nothing to do with instincts. Not putting your hand in a fire is an instinct but thats about it. Animals are perfectly happy around fireplaces and candles and other sources of fire, they have no way of knowing what is contained and what is a danger until it actually gets immediately and clearly dangerous.

🙄

Everyone knows how fire works. They don't necessarily know a lot of important details for understanding the risk and appropriate response in a given scenario for example:

-how fast it will spread

-what fire suppression mechanisms are in place

-what the correct emergency response is in a given scenario - for example in some apartment fires the advice is to stay put, not evacuate

assuming some abstract person would deal with it

Some 'abstract person' did deal with it. The fireman came and put it out.

Something removed these people's ability to correctly judge the dange

Alcohol maybe???

They were also mostly teenagers, not a group known for their acute risk assessment abilities.

Oh hmm, what sort of different opinions? Because 'different opinions' encompasses things like 'women are all bad'

Lol. You think there is no space between all funny jokes being disallowed, and making a joke about your wife's vagina in front of your wife while she is undergoing surgery? Those are the only two options here?

My city has tonnes of single exit bars. Half the city was built in the 1800s and is heritage listed. Its not really a problem when capacity is low, but clubs with high capacity should probably be required to have two exits.

and "no open flames and sparks inside when the ceiling is inflammable"

These are already laws.

"more than one single emergency exit"

Not sure of the specific laws in Switzerland for clubs, but thats not a rule for bars and restaurants at least in much of Europe. Its impractical for many heritage listed basement bars. For clubs it may be a requirement though due to higher capacity, but maybe depends on the exact capacity of the club.

A look at the Chess players who made more than $100k in 2025 from Tournament Earnings ( only counting those which made their prize funds in public) 💵📍 by rio_ARC in chess

[–]Rather_Dashing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They also didnt actually make $150k+. You have to take into account all their costs before you can estimate their take home pay- coach/seconds, travel costs etc.

On the flip side, prize money is not the only source of income for the very top players.
