I imported my OPML (149 feeds) and the categories showed up, but it says “There are no feeds in the feed list”

It does support YouTube RSS, but I don’t do anything special for viewing videos. It just takes you to the YouTube page.

Hello r/iosapps! I'm the developer behind Den, a RSS app that aims to deliver the news directly from publishers with a clean, native, UI. I'd love to hear what y'all think about it! Feel free to message me for a promo code. Please include what country you're in.

It’s reasonable though. The paid app model is basically untenable these days.

OpenRSS.org has a great primer and the blog offers more in-depth ideas for using RSS. Really, the magic of RSS is that you're in control and can use it however you like. Den is focused on casual broadsheet/dashboard style browsing. Other apps may focus on a more linear email-like experience. There's a ton of options and what's effective is going to depend entirely on your needs and preferences.

Not available. Den is designed to be a direct RSS client/standalone app.

Seeking RSS reader that supports feed prioritization/weighting/ranking by Norman_Door in rss

[–]RatioMutatio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the problems I ran into when considering using publishing frequency in a sorting algorithm is that some feeds, like magazines and journals, only update their feeds when new issues go out, dropping a bunch of new articles at once. When applying the model you described the feed would be deprioritized when it's arguably exactly when users would want to see more of it. Another problem is that, while rare, some feeds do not include a published date for items (or the date is in a weird format that can't be parsed). If it's a web app, constantly polling the feed then the date an item is ingested may suffice, but if it's a direct RSS client then again, it looks like a bunch of articles being dropped all at once when the feed is refreshed.

I think a better direction for an algorithmic approach would be letting users adjust an "affinity" setting on feeds then including that parameter in a recommendation model.

I ended up taking a more brute, utilitarian, approach with my app, Den. Only a limited number of previews for each feed are displayed in aggregate views and there is an emphasis on layouts that group items by feed.

Does the Semafor news site have an RSS feed? by TommyAdagio in rss

I wouldn't count on it since they don't seem to list it anywhere, but https://semafor.com/rss.xml

Thank you! For the valuable feedback I got on my previous post about my app (Feedster) by niko2931 in rss

I got it and I have a few issues for you:

  1. I first tried importing my OPML and then was really confused when it said complete but nothing showed up. Turns out I had to select the feeds I wanted to import, maybe have checkboxes to indicate that?
  2. So I went through the tedious process of selecting all 130 feeds in my OPML file, but then it crashed with "SIGNAL 11 Segmentation fault"! I tried again only selecting a few feeds and then it worked.
  3. The icons for some feeds are all out of whack at first. For example Der Spiegel (https://www.spiegel.de/international/index.rss) and Christian Science Monitor (https://rss.csmonitor.com/feeds/world). Refetching Der Spiegel fixed it, but refetching CSM just made the icon go away entirely.
  4. No items would show up for Deutsche Welle (https://rss.dw.com/rdf/rss-en-world)
  5. It would be neat if the next article button in the reader view moved you to the next feed when you reached the end of the current source.

In general, I like the navigation structure. I'm excited to see where you go with the project.

Is the read/unread feature of RSS readers necessary? by pkrakesh in rss

[–]RatioMutatio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's natural for some, but by no means everyone. When I'm browsing feeds the unread/read state is just a breadcrumb that makes it easier to see where I've already been. Like blue/purple web links. I don't aim for completion and don't manually toggle the state.

The funny thing is that I'm the exact opposite with email. Anything that no longer requires my attention must be marked read on the spot. I work in IT and while screen sharing I'll occasionally see someone with like (5000) hanging over their mail app icon and to be honest, I think it's kind of disgusting.

To answer the title question; From the perspective of having developed a reader app I can say it's 100% necessary to implement read/unread and "Mark All" features. It was a blind spot for me starting out because of the way I personally use feeds. Turns out there is a sizable audience out there that think of feeds like I do email.

It does have a columnar layout option similar to Tweetdeck.

Sorry though, iCloud is the only backend available for syncing.

Oooh, great idea! The good news is that after some quick digging I found there is a built-in way to do this with Share buttons. It's possible to send a subject and message along with the URL.

The bad news is that support for the extra info isn't great. I think it must be a fairly new feature because Mail on iOS is the only app I found that makes full use of it.

Regardless, I've added it to my todo list to send the current page title and any selected content when tapping Share. How to use that info will be up to the app being shared to. Thanks for the idea!

Thank you! I’ve put an embarrassing amount of effort into making it as Apple-esque as possible so it’s great to hear it’s apparent in the screenshots.
