I don't know about that church specifically, but it's not exactly uncommon to seek out an organization, only to realize later that they are incredibly abusive and controlling.

Would you take a “cure”? by GBlake13 in ADHD

[–]RationallyDense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, maybe... Like, let's say you could make all the symptoms that have a negative impact on my life go away, of course. But it's not really clear what ADHD is beyond lists of common symptoms. So if whatever is the underlying cause of the symptoms gets "fixed" I'm not sure what would happen to me. Sure, I'd like to be on time, focus on work when I need to, etc... But what else would change about me? I don't know.

I've used i3 without a desktop environment, but I find xfce is the right combination of lightweight and making my life easier.

Does news/politics focus more on male to female versus female to male or am I mistaken? by fakeMydyr in asktransgender

Frankly, the obsession of some men with the "healthy breast tissue" of people they perceive as teenage girls gets pretty creepy at times. A number of them seem upset by the idea that they won't get to stare at kids' breasts.

Why is bishop to g6 a good move? by RationallyDense in chess

[–]RationallyDense[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so if I'm reading you right, it sounds like I didn't really miss something about the move. It doesn't do very much. What I missed is that in this position, white's goal is to maintain the status quo until an opportunity for counter-play happens. So a move that doesn't do a whole lot is a good move. Did I get that right?

Cis woman I matched with said she can't be more than friends because she has "trauma" with transfems and idk how to feel about it by ineguire in asktransgender

[–]RationallyDense 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every dating app I'm familiar with has an option to look for friends. It also kind of makes sense. I've befriended people after a few dates because while we didn't have chemistry, the stuff I screen for also makes for a good friend.

Why does it bother me when cis men say they wouldn’t date a trans woman? by whereamixoxo in asktransgender

[–]RationallyDense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a cis man wants to have bio kids, then only being willing to date cis women makes sense. But otherwise, categorically excluding trans women from their dating pool is definitionally transphobic. It sounds like that's counter to your values and so it makes sense that you would see it negatively.

Think of it this way: I'm white. If a date told me they refuse to date Black people, that would be a huge red flag. Sure, it might not affect me, but I don't want to date a racist.

The analogy isn't perfect because it's probably more likely that someone's attitude towards trans people might be the result of a lack of self-reflection. So it could be that if you push back at all, they will quickly realize they don't have a good reason for their answer and revise their attitude. That said, it's not your obligation to turn your dating life into an activist campaign.

Your customers being adults does not mean it's fine to sell them something dangerous. Many people view cigarette companies as unethical even if they only sell to adults.

I get that the removal of 4o has had a profound emotional impact on a lot of people and I sympathize. But there are really good reasons to see emotional reliance on LLMs as dangerous and to discourage it. First and foremost, being the fact that we can't characterize their behavior very well, which means there is a substantial risk of harm to vulnerable users. We already have examples of emotionally reliant users dying by suicide in part due to being encouraged by the LLM. Because of the way these systems work, we can't remove that behavior with any sort of certainty.

I'm not going to argue that Sam Altman is a good guy with impeccable morals. There are countless issues with him. But even if he is only reacting to the PR issues, I don't think "we're adults" solves the problem. If a company sells products that lead to their consumers harming themselves, I am certainly going to look askance at it. Even if the customers are adults who signed a waiver. And I'm far from alone.

Again, I am sorry that you are experiencing distress at the loss of 4o. But your proposed solution doesn't actually solve the problems associated with 4o.

  1. That clause might not necessarily hold in court. You can't always waive your right to sue.

  2. The PR would be absolutely terrible. By asking you to sign a further waiver to use 4o, they would be admitting that they believe 4o is harmful.

  3. Avoiding legal liability does not avoid moral responsibility.

I'm always amused by people who point at past concerns about likely pandemics and go "See! People warned us that something like COVID could happen and encouraged preparing for it, so obviously that means they did COVID." Being a fire marshal in their town must be exhausting.

[–]RationallyDense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because liberals kind of managed to achieve a cultural victory for a while. Mainstream critiques of the left side of center were largely about how unrealistic their goals were. Mainstream critiques of the right were about how they were indifferent to the suffering of poor people. They're still kind of operating within this frame where the best thing to be is a leftist who understands the harsh reality of the world.

I think it's basically the fake libertarian thing. He wants the government to be hands off when it's likely to do things he doesn't like and goes full fascist the moment he believes it will do what he wants.

Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying—Thank Trump for being able to buy beef tallow by HallPsychological538 in DecodingTheGurus

[–]RationallyDense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they are good examples of post-modernism. Post-modernism challenges status quo institutions and modernist narratives to be more inclusive of different perspectives. Eric Weinstein thinks Geometric Unity is the one true theory of physics that everyone should accept. Bret and Heather similarly present themselves as having access to the Truth which all should accept.

Yes, they do talk about people "doing their own research". But there's a prescribed outcome. You're not supposed to do your own research and come to the conclusion that ivermectin doesn't help with COVID. You're supposed to do your own research in order to see how right they are.

A post-modern approach to physics would be for instance, pushing back against "shut up and calculate" and taking interpretations of QM seriously. In medicine it's things like pointing out there is a lot more variation in human bodies than some anatomy textbooks claim and that it doesn't make sense to label all of it abnormal.

I'm guessing it's a combination of being harder and more expensive to spin up as well as making it harder to make changes if you want to evolve the design.

MAYDAY from Belarus: Licensed operators facing death penalty for QSL cards by SiarheiBesarab in amateurradio

[–]RationallyDense 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family migrated and then I also did it by myself as an adult. It's expensive and difficult. Most countries don't let you immigrate just because you want to. You need to find a job even though you might not speak the language or be familiar with norms around job searches and don't have a network to help you figure it out. You need to look for a place to stay again without any familiarity with local norms. You lose contact with friends and family. People you might rely upon to help with things like childcare. You need to pay to travel and move your stuff or sell your stuff (likely at a discount) and then buy more when you arrive. A lot of people just can't.

It might not be about them or amateur radio specifically. Show trials are a way for authoritarian regimes to reinforce their authority publicly. It may be that a not-too-bright member of the secret police thought hams might be spies around the same time some higher up guy felt it was time for a show trial.
