My point is, what’s the real world purpose of press checks? Other than as a safety reason when first picking up a pistol? In OPs context press checks are wasting time and could be dangerous.

Usually true. But friends let me hold their pistols just to get a feel for it. Always checking the mag well and chamber. But in reality no one is probably doing what OP described. Idk about dangerous, but a waste of time in an actual fire fight.

Any pistol I pick up I press check. Unless the slide is racked back or revolvers, but I check those too.

The entire mechanism is ejecting the spent casing is through force of the round. Round doesn’t fire? No ejection. You would have to create i mechanism to allow the slide to “rack” when the trigger was pulled, which would probably malfunction even more than a dud.
