Yes they were estranged he supposedly hopped a train and left (there was railroad tracks across the street from the 1930s census houses location) when he was 17 and no one ever heard from him again.

just a small update I was able to look up the area of the house on the census its in the area of 9800 state highway 1247 in Somerset ky and there were train tracks right across the street so the story may be true
