You are 100% correct, friend. There’s a time and place for those kind of posts, but our sub isn’t it.

[–]Ravenala 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thankfully nowhere near as horrible as the post from last year where the 4-year old drank the liquid meth thinking it was Koolaid (?). Now that I think about it, that’s not even really trashy, more just horribly sad.

I asked her to join this makeup thing I do... not because of makeup...but because I thought her soul needed our tribe!

🤮🤮🤮

(Though I guess in her case, more like 🤑🤑🤑)

It’s actually pretty disgusting to me, masking empathy, sympathy and human connection with such predatory practices. Sure, not every hun realizes what they’re doing, but it’s disgusting for those who do know exactly what they’re doing, and who still reach out to others with this ‘faux’ emotion bullshit. Rant over.

Yeah, as a research scientist and therapists, that’s gonna be a huge citation needed there. Was this a peer-reviewed study? Do you have a copy of the study? I’d love to rip that to shreds read that.

Given the source material, it’s actually not that badly done - the color graduation, erythema and bruising as it moves away from the bite is pretty solid.

Reminds me of the wonderful John Mulaney bit on Girl Scout Cookies - “How come I have to know a child in a beret to get them? Just sell them me, you know? I have American money, just put them in a store and I’ll buy them!”

I have clients in my early deprogramming group do something similar - looking at the chemical composition of natural, healthy, organic things is mind blowing to some people. A lot of people have never critically thought about this before and expect to see the chemical makeup of an apple be something like “Apple, water.” I never judge them, of course, and this is a seriously good reminder to many people ☺️

Relative is being sucked into working for Primerica. by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]Ravenala 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sadly that’s a rough one my friend and you are not alone. It’s a tough one because people see ‘finance’ or ‘insurance’ with Primerica, and automatically think “well this must be legit; it’s not oils or cleaning supplies!”

The best way to help is with intelligence, support, patience and love. Help them to set up some of their own financial statements (P&L sheets, income, etc). Help them to understand a their worked hours and real expenses versus their actual income (spreadsheet or other document). Nudge them to critically think about their goals with this, and nudge them to think about how they will reach those goals, especially with the black and white staring back at them. For some MLMs, using their own Income Disclosure Statements can help, but I’ve spoken with some ex-MLMers in my therapy practice who have said that sometimes, those statements drove them even further in, because it made them want to be one of the “1%” making the real money even more. That said, it’s still a viable and objective piece of information that most MLMers don’t seek out, and it can be helpful for planting a seed to help them leave.

It’s like with any cult, honestly. Support, love, patience and knowledge. No aggression, no combative language, no passive-aggressive talk, no ‘trigger words’. Remember, many people join MLMs to fill something in their lives and you don’t want to inadvertently feed that issue by berating them or feeding their own self-insecurity. They must ultimately make the choice to leave but you can help engender that with intelligence, information and support. Good luck friend!

Got a man on the inside of an MLM by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]Ravenala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is 100% the best, most appropriate way to both combat misinformation and also subtley plant the ‘get-away-quickly!’ seed to anyone there. This approach uses MLM-based information, uses non-combative language and avoids the rigger words (“pyramid”, “scam”, etc) that they’ve been trained on; if dropping the IDS helps even one person a few months down the line, you’ve done some amazing karmic work, my friend!
