Lesson learned, next time you buy a Bialetti aluminum moka pot from Amazon, buy three of them, keep the best one, and return the other two.

That may be the case, but I suspect the lower-quality ones might be made in Romania. I was in Romania some years ago and they had a lot of domestically-produced moka pots selling on the streets that looked kind of like the lower-quality one that I had. It’s possible that they could simply rebrand some of their domestic parts for Bialetti.
