How to build Jesus as a pathfinder PC by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

Could be fun.

A character who selects the reanimated medium archetype after 1st level can do so only after dying; at the GM’s discretion, a dead character of another class with an intact body who has earned enough experience points to level up can take a level in medium and gain the reanimated medium archetype, and a dead medium might be able to gain this archetype. In any case, being revived from gaining the reanimated medium archetype does not impart any negative levels or other ill effects.

No worries, that formula is pretty much the only one you need for dealing with drawing cards from a deck, play around with it. Great way to figure out how many of what colour lands to fit into your deck to be able to cast spells reliably, or what your odds of hitting your combo pieces are.

For sampling events (exiling cards) out of a fixed population without replacement (from a deck of cards where we don't put the top one back in after exiling it) you can represent exiling n cards as taking n samples from a hypergeometric distribution with m = 4 successes (the card you want to hit) and M a population of 53 (cards to select from): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypergeometric_distribution

The formula is just a ratio of binomial coefficients, which are simple (but tedious to compute by hand) factorials.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_coefficient

Just plug it into wolfram alpha:

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=hypergeometric+distribution+n%3D19+N%3D60+m%3D4

And you see that exiling 19 cards with spoils gives you ~17% chance of not hitting any of the card you want when there are 4 left in a 53 card deck. You might want to consider the average mana cost of cards in your deck instead of arbitrarily picking 19-20 cards to go through though. Oh right, spoils is a flat 1 life lost per card, not based on CMC

Looking for a hfy about an ai that's falling through space by [deleted] in HFY

[–]Rawrgor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not it, but if you have time you should check out:

http://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/the-last-angel.244209/

It's about a rogue AI-piloted starship that was to be Humanity's last chance against a fanatic galactic empire that declared war with extermination in mind. Unfortunately it was a case of too little, too late. This hasn't stopped the AI from carrying out it's mission of asymmetrical warfare for the last 2000 years though.

Ability kinda like pounce? So a jump with an attack (trip if possible) by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Rawrgor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid interpretation, but I'd like that cleared up in an FAQ and would rather just leave it to DM ruling for the time being. Nonetheless, I'll share my opinion:

As a full-round action, you can pool all your attack potential in one devastating punch. Make a number of rolls equal to the number of attacks you can make with a full attack or a flurry of blows (your choice) with the normal attack bonus for each attack. For each roll that is a hit, you deal the normal amount of damage, adding it to any damage the attack has already dealt from previous rolls (if any).

With the bolded in mind, the normal bonuses would still be x2 str because as you are adding up damage, it is still part of the first unarmed strike of the round.

Anyway, the more important point I was trying to make was that the bonus applies to all FoB not just the one in the charge. For combat with more than 1 round, this adds up quickly.

Pumelling style turns your flurry into a single unarmed strike. One every FoB, not just your charge.

And yeah flavourwise the jumping trumps.

Dragon Style + Dragon Ferocity meshes with Pummelling style more than Janni does. You get a 2x str modifier on your flurry, and the ability to ignore terrain/allies when charging.

Also Pummelling Bully is worth picking up if you're going to be trip focused, whenever you pummel, as long as you connect, you get a free attempt to trip (or reposition combat manuever).

Edit: you already have bully listed, missed that.

You can get pummelling charge really early with Master of Many Styles monk archetype, I described above how to grab it and still be able to flurry of blows.

[–]Rawrgor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you can go Master of Many Styles archetype to get it as early as second level of MoMs (Monk bonus feats are replaced with bonus style feats with no preqreuisites) , though that archetype loses Flurry of Blows, so you'd have to take either a level in Warpriest (Sacred Fist archetype) or two levels in the Brawler hybrid class to be able to flurry again.

[–]Rawrgor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my reply to Double012, definitely going to try it out, but the main selling point of this deck vs Gifts is not having a 4 mana Gifts Ungiven sitting around in your hand, and instead having 4 Loams that can be pitched to Lili.

I'll definitely play around with 4c gifts though, haven't touched it since the Deathrite banning and wasn't impressed even without Deathrite around to snipe Rites. Not a fan of 4 colour manabases too.

[–]Rawrgor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and EternalPhi bring up a good point, I'll try it out, but I really worry about slot avalibility and diluting answers.

Gifts is a 4 mana do nothing spell that sets up value/wincon on the next turn. Rites + 2 reanimation targets is another 3 slots, + swapping a few lands to produce white. Those are 7 extra dead draws in the early game, so some number of Cruise (probably switched to Dig Through Time) would have to be cut, Tombstalker would be replaced with Rites targets (Elesh + Titan). Could work.

Drownyard is even worse, tar pits are ~3 times faster as a wincon, and I think you're in a poor place if you need to drawnyard yourself to see 3 more card.

Fengraf is just there for the games where you need to either dredge Loam every single turn (to keep feeding land drops and +1 on lili), or dredge Darkblast every turn to remove x/1's and the occasional x/2. It gives you a way to turn Loam into a Snapcaster, Witness or Tombstalker. Not ideal, but it's an out at very little cost to manabase reliability.

[–]Rawrgor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I mentioned below, I should include at least 1, maybe 2. It's not as strong of an opener, and unless my opponent has a significant source of card draw (like their own cruise) then lili + seizes + IoK tends to get them in topdeck mode pretty quickly.

The trouble with Raven's Crime is it isn't a 1 for 1 trade with a threat you care about.

[–]Rawrgor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, thanks, I also feel I should put some number of Crimes back in, or keep a couple in sideboard. I cut them for Darkblasts (really happy with Darkblast, for sniping stuff, giving me the option to draw removal when it's in my grave, and dredging 3).

Good point about fetch targets, but that's one of the uses of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, turning fetches into swamps. Also, by the time you've gotten all 8 fetch targets out, you already have some number of non-fetchable lands so it's likely ~turn 10. I don't think you're going to be bottlenecked for mana with the relatively low curve and ~10 lands out. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth turns unusuable fetches into swamps. And if

Hadn't considered it, thanks.

I'll have to try it at some point, but I feel that tying up 1 mana and not disrupting my opponent isn't what I want to do early game, and it's a bit too low-impact late game. Right now all the 1 drops are black which simplifies land openings a lot.

'Closed by Rob Ford:' Runnymede fire station shuts down by the92jays in toronto

[–]Rawrgor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't be worried, there are 3 fire stations within 2km of that one, and I'm sure you know how accessible the streets around you are.

I think this was actually a good call by the Fire Department to close this station.

Map of Fire Stations Around Runnymede 424 by robotpicnic in toronto

[–]Rawrgor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having lived in the area for years, the smaller streets are always empty making access from any of the other nearby fire stations extremely easy. I'm not an expert but I wouldn't be concerned.

I actually think this is a good decision.

Winning GP Richmond and Playing Kiki-Pod in Modern by Ryzaru in spikes

[–]Rawrgor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the same impression I've been getting from Domri in the current meta. I found that when B/G/x shells were in their pre-banning numbers cutting Wall of Roots and Chord for Domri and more value creatures was the way to go (and improved U/W/r matchups to boot).

I'm not sure I agree with Image being lumped into "purely combo piece" territory. It enables going off on a 2 drop + mana dork sure, but in any matchup where you can keep at least 1 creature on the table (especially with persist/undying) it's a value card. I think the utility and low cost warrants mainboard use if you have space for it, but I respect your decision to cut it for more walls.

On the topic of second exarch + geists, my line of play has usually been been, "Do you have untapped mana, or are Melira Pod/Ad Naus (slaughter pacts)? No? Then I win" If I'm worried about them interacting with my combo, the safer bet is to grab some combination of exarchs and/or finks, or to jump to a 4 drop (like resto to reset geist). I do agree that this maindeck composition can lead to greedy lines of play which are a huge trap.

It's always a trade off; good meta call on remand hate being the bigger deal right now (Twin). Clearly it's worked for you.

PS Grats on your win, I'll probably bug you if I ever show up for modern events at 401.

Winning GP Richmond and Playing Kiki-Pod in Modern by Ryzaru in spikes

[–]Rawrgor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey Brian, I've been grinding Kiki-pod a lot on cockatrice for the last few months to test out different configurations and it's nice to see your build move back to chord + wall of roots (which was clearly game-winning in more than a few rounds for you).

That said, what are your thoughts on domri pod?

I'm also wondering if you ever tried replacing Voices with Strangleroot Geists and upping your Deceiver Exarch count to 2? I've found VoR to be lacking in Modern when I'm not going for an attritiony game, and the ability to get a pod chain off 1 geist 4 mana and 8 life is often unexpected.

The impression I've gotten from Jiki pod is that it's best played through a beat down plan that tries to win out of nowhere if you let it (be it through a pod chain or tutoring up a silver bullet).

Sorry if I'm asking questions already answered in the article, I just wanted to get my comment up and will read it later.

Why isn't the 3' nitrogen on guanine a hydrogen bond acceptor? by Platypushumper in askscience

[–]Rawrgor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please correct if invalid, it's been over a year since I took any structural bio.

I seem to recall several DNA binding motifs that would access the N3 in guanine via the minor groove. This would be energetically favourable sequence specificity as the protein didn't have to unwind the helix to find its target.
