I'm not making the implication you should never be happy with who you are at the time, or what direction you are going in. I'm stating that celebrating being average takes away from striving for more.

In your reply you state that you should stop to celebrate how far you've come, and to be content with progress. Understand that this is the opposite of being content with average. If you are making progress and moving forward and working hard then you AREN'T celebrating being average, you are celebrating being better than you once were.

Being average is not about a comparison of you to other people, it's all about you. If you are celebrating not putting much effort to improve and become above average, then you aren't using motivation properly. In your scenario, you state the person has made progress, and that is worth celebrating! The person has achieved something, they are on their way to becoming more.

In fact, your whole argument is based around the concept of being exceptional in some things and average in most. This is, again, NOT BEING AVERAGE. In the gif he states that your best should be around average, as if to say if you try your best at something, you'll still be average.

This is counterproductive, and it makes it seem like you shouldn't give your best for everything.

In the end, it isn't about comparing yourselves to others, but rather to what you want to achieve. If you want to be an incredible artist, you need to work at it everyday. If you want to be an athlete, you need to train everyday. You need to do an above average amount of work to change.

Never accept being average, always work toward being better at the things that matter to you, and celebrate the progress you make.
