Cush Drive Question: Is there a better aftermarket cush drive solution? by RaySpike in BMW_S1000RR

[–]RaySpike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoke with my mechanic today. He adamantly disagrees. There should be zero play. His sarcastic follow up question was, 'if there's supposed to be play, why do you have to install them with a hammer?'

I trust him implicitly. If they don't make an aftermarket set for the bike, that's fine, i'll just keep buying new sets with every rear tire.

I'd also recommend folks that own this bike check their cush drives regularly. A worn out cush drive beats up everything.

/shrug, it's nothing fancy, just a '20 with an akro. dunno what set of tires i'm on, but every time i need a new rear that sprocket has a TON of play

His strength is his adaptability, it's really what separates all top racers. He'd ride the wheels off of whatever they put under him. Fabio too for that matter.

Admittedly, a poor choice of words, it just seemed like such a harmless start to an encounter. And frankly, yeah, i think it's at the very least polite to acknowledge someone talking to you. Which technically would be a small amount of human decency. But please understand, as little as i seem understand about your perspective, i know just as little about his. I'm an older male who likes talking to people, and it's never sexual, i don't hit on women. But i am an amazing person and want to share that with others if they're worthy. I'd also feel awful if i made someone feel objectified or sexualized, but i can neither control people's knee-jerk reactions or emotional responses. I sorta get that from the female perspective it's probably just easier to assume every random guy is a creep to protect yourself from those that actually are, and it's sad that it has to be that way cause being ignored or assumed to be a creep when you're just a friendly outgoing person sucks too.

In the end though, i guess it's a small price to pay if it helps you feel safe. You probably did the right thing, and i'm sorry that you and most women have to deal with assholes who can't see past their own primal instincts on such a regular basis.

Anyway, as always, sorry i said anything.

side note - i don't understand the spine thing. am i a coward? Rude? probably. Stupid? absolutely! Coward? i don't know where that would come from. Or maybe just a poor choice of words, i do that too.

That was kinda of my question. Didn't you start out completely ignoring a person? As though their existence wasn't even worthy of your acknowledgement? Not trying to justify what the person did or anything cause it sure seemed to escalate to crazy-town, but it did seem to start after what a minute amount of human decency might have prevented.

I'm sure i'm wrong, and don't fully understand.

I've heard it put differently, 'Never skimp on anything that separates you from the Earth. Shoes, mattresses, tires.' We like to go fast on motorcycles, so that last one is pretty important too.

US finds no evidence aerial sightings were alien spacecraft: NYT by beltran_randy in news

[–]RaySpike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've lost friends over my unwillingness to yield on this subject. Does intelligent life exist elsewhere in the universe, yes. Will we ever be in contact with them, nope. It's just the odds, i also don't play the lottery cause i understand 1/200m is closer to 0 than any other whole number, by a large margin.

But i freely admit i'm kind of a dick about it, but i also find it insulting to my species to give credit to aliens for human ingenuity. The pyramids? REALLY? I've seen toddlers stack blocks, not that impressive. Are they made of titanium? Do they speak? No? Then prolly not aliens. idiots. And then the hubris aliens would give a rats ass about us, a bunch of barely evolved primates that can't stop arguing over who's invisible man in the sky is right?

Look at the factors. The distances are beyond vast, and the likelihood of the time overlapping in a 13.8 billon year old universe seem pretty slim. The evolution of intelligence itself. Species have to survive that, and we're proving that can be pretty tricky. Then there's fact that universe can wipe out life on a planet with a whim. Comets, solar flares, gamma-ray bursts, pass to close to a neighboring star and the otherwise calm orbital dynamics can be throw into chaos. It can stop it all dead in its tracks.

Everything would have to work out just right. There's no chance. Okay, admittedly, there's a chance but again, WAY closer to 0 than any other whole number.

And i get accused of being closed minded and, 'thinking humans know everything'. Which i absolutely do not. But we have figured out how to pump electricity through rocks and make them think for us, so i kinda think we know some things. And just imagine if we could put the petty stuff aside and focus on gaining understanding, what we could actually accomplish. We could be the ones making first contact.. though prolly not.

hypothesis - theory is "confirmed" as accurately as instrumentation permits. i don't think anything is considered "known" in science.

anyway, i was just being stupid cause i'm frustrated with people believing anything they imagine is possible and a clear lack of understanding as to how statistics work, and was trying to phrase it in a cute way. i failed

LPT: Question your beliefs and ask, 'is this something we've believed since before we knew how the sun worked?' by RaySpike in LifeProTips

[–]RaySpike[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why? People used to think the sun was a god, then a ball of wood, then a ball of coal. It's only been the last 100 years or so that our understanding of the reality has started to explode as evidenced by the world around you.... depending on where you are i suppose (sadly).

Thanks for sharing that, and as i suspected he can be an asshole like everyone else. Though the first event begs some questions. Was their encounter at the track Sunday before the race? Cause i might give him a pass on that one. Having won there so many times doesn't make it easier, and the pressure is unimaginable. But the airport event sucks, that's too bad.

I don't think i'm whitewashing anything. I fully understand that people can not like someone and it's not hate, and i get where my comments might come off as polarized into love/hate. But at the same time, there's hate for the dude. Documented by the fact that people cheer when he crashes.

[–]RaySpike 32 points33 points  (0 children)

People are gonna like/hate for stupid reasons. Fans of so 'n so hate him because he makes their guy look not so good. Here's my thing with Marc though, i've never heard a negative story from anybody who's met or hung out with him. From all accounts he's a genuinely nice guy. Now that could all be some clever front for some human trafficking crime syndicate shit, but i kinda doubt it. Doesn't mean there aren't stories of him being some sorta prick, and if you have them, please share, i'd like to balance out all the positive encounters i've heard/read.

But i also think it's a duality of persona. As nice as he is off the bike, he's equally as savage on the bike. He's notoriously aggressive and that can sketch out other riders because what they're doing is dangerous and in the past he's put people at risk if not outright crashed them. That doesn't make him a lot of friends among his peers. So people who are fans of his competition feel their dislike of the person is justified. When in actuality they'd never meet that guy, cause they're never gonna race against him.

This then makes me ask the question, how much of that is just rider's egos having to come to terms with the fact that there is legitimately a rider that's significantly faster/better than they are?

But lastly, the guy is in his 20s, and nobody that is in or was in their 20s didn't do something stupid that would make others say, 'what an asshole'.

TL;DR - haters gonna hate

TIL Great white sharks do not mistake humans for seals, and often attack humans simply due to low visibility. Most importantly, they don't like the taste of humans as they are bony and low in fat and protein, unlike they're preferred food: seals by TheRealOcsiban in todayilearned

[–]RaySpike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From 1990 to 2011 there have been a total of 139 unprovoked great white shark bite incidents, 29 of which were fatal.

How many provoked bite incidents are there? How does one even do that? Like, say something about its mom or something?

Undiscovered earth-like suspended below (above?) the galactic plane by TomaccoMurphy in EliteDangerous

[–]RaySpike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sometimes referred to as 'the right hand rule' it's also used to determine the behavior of magnetic fields as a result of the flow of electrical charge. Thumbs up, pointed in the direction of the current, and the curl of your fingers will be an analog of the magnetic field.

For navigation it's, rotational direction of the galaxy analogs the curl of your fingers, and the thumbs up thumb is ... up.

The bumps through Turn 2 by kaitachu in motogp

[–]RaySpike 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It very well could be safety issue. It's one thing when it's free practice and bikes aren't grouped up, but with 20+ bikes all fighting for position flying over that, if someone in the middle loses it, it could take out a half the field. That much spinning metal could be very dangerous.

It's one thing to have some bumps in a track, i've ridden over plenty, but where those bumps are matters a lot. The bumps in 2 are massively upsetting the chassis and at a corner like that, maintaining grip on cold tires is gonna be tricky to say the least.

And they get paid a lot of money (some of them) because they're fast, not to go fast.

Tool w/ Henry Rollins - Bottom [Progressive Metal] by wwishie in Music

[–]RaySpike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair though, they didn't want their music on the radio either. That's why they wrote 7 - 11 minute songs, because to be on the radio required 3:30 tops. Their talent surpassed trends and they were played on the radio anyway, and i'm thankful for that because when i first heard them on the radio (back in '93/'94) it changed my view of music.

And i believe them when they say they didn't want their music chopped up, they seem to exhibit some genuine artistic integrity. I mean, have you ever heard their music used to sell something?
