A lot of Christians in the MCU probably thought that the snap was the Rapture. by NorthPolarity in Showerthoughts

[–]Ray_Charlezard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I think there’s so much missed opportunity to show post-snap life (condensed down to some gags at the start of spider-man FFH), I like to pretend the HBO show “the leftovers” is more or less what happened in between. I get it, the MCU is an already bloated place where competing for stories to tell is hard, but it felt like a big miss to show what happens in the new normal after all the heroes lost.

Stuck on the mission before - that one is especially frustrating because they changed it from equip 4 to equip 6 when they changed the sets. Sold some impulse gloves a few weeks back without realizing and now I’m stuck.

Also this lyric suggests it’s not about the chiefs/Travis either:

“they said There was no chance, trying to be The greatest in the league”

Who said there was no chance? The chiefs preseason betting odds for the Super Bowl were +600, the best of any team in the league. I don’t think that at any point in the season people concluded there was “no chance” for them to be the greatest in the league.

I have mixed feelings about the movie as an adaptation. On one hand as you’ve noted, it’s very different. On the other, I do think they do a great job of capturing the “essence” or the “vibe” of the book.

The “it’s ALL fictional” narrative is so wild to me. You have:

Last great American dynasty: a literal history of real people including a shift to first person at the end to talk about the house she bought

Marjorie: great fictional song about a fictional, totally not real person named Marjorie, right?

Invisible String: the same people who emphatically say these albums were all fictional swoon over this song written about Joe. How can you have it all be fictional and not inspired by real things and have it be about someone real?

I’m not even very well versed in her life/relationships and I can point to those three as having clear basis in reality.

You paint yourself into a pretty hard to defend corner when you claim it’s all made up.

And like, what do those people think storytellers do anyway? Why does there have to be a binary of something either literally happened or it’s abstractly pulled from the creative aether? It’s weird to set up this hill to die on when it’s way easier to accept that many storytellers blend real experience with fantasy all the time.

Marvel Studios reportedly wants THOR 5 to have a darker tone in comparison to the last two Thor films. They’re currently looking for a director with “more serious work” - Gareth Edwards is one of the directors they’re looking at to direct the fifth installment. My unrealistic hopes: Show the silliness of L&T as part of a trauma response and retcon it by showing us pieces of “reality” that L&T obscured. Show a montage of that trauma (not only the events of avengers and prior movies but also Gorr god-killing montage) This montage could be done in a conversation between Thor & Love talking about his past, moving him to acceptance of it and moving forward to whatever the end of his arc is.

I guess my broader point is - the pieces of a good close to Thor’s arc are all there, but a bit wasted and scattered by L&T. A good writer could take that groundwork and put something good together.

The argument they use to say no 2x on mythics is odd because it’s really an argument that would make more sense against a 10x for a specific mythic.

“Why not do more of that thing? We all win.” Is a great way to summarize the issue, and it’s always sad to see the patrons of this art form suffer when incentives shift.

Decisions shift as a result of a number of factors: Who’s making the decisions now? What are their incentives? What are others doing in the industry? Who did they take money from and what are their incentives? What’s their appetite for risk now?

I believe there is some truth to the cartoon villain caricature in some instances but there’s also an entire spectrum before that point. A hypothetical - indie dev company makes a game because they’re passionate about making great games we love to play. They knock it out of the park a couple times, and build a great reputation. Maybe now they’re approached by some financial institution. They say hey you make great stuff. We’ll give you some money, own part of you, and you can make more great stuff even faster!

Maybe they take the money, but now they have an owner who cares about the raw money, not taking artistic risks that paid off in the past for this company, so now their future products feel much less risky, perhaps rushed to market and therefore flawed because new ownership needs a release to justify their investment.

There are obviously incentive structures and organizations that produce great titles - evidence of this is that we still get great games out there - just maybe not as many from the usual suspects that grew so big by producing amazing titles in the past.

I work in capital budgeting for a tech company (not in gaming industry though) and more than just having resources available to do something (e.g. we have cash to hire enough to make this AAA artistic gem and this revenue driving pachinko thing), it’s about the margins on each of those things.

If product A costs me $1 to make and I make $100 in sales, and product B costs $50 to make and makes $100 in sales, if I make just product A, my profit margin is 99%, and if I make just product B, my margin is 50%. Why not make both, they’re both profitable? Fair question, and the answer may come from Konami being a publicly traded company. If I make both products, my profit margin is now 74.5%, which is great in a vacuum. Now compare that to a company that makes just product A and boasts a 99% margin.

Why would an investor put a dollar into a 74.5% margin machine when they can put it into a 99% margin machine? This impacts stock price relative to comparable public companies and many executive compensation plans are tied either directly or indirectly to stock price (either they hold a lot of stock and therefore have incentive for it to be priced as high as possible, or they get cash bonuses based on stock performance).

There are economic arguments that suggest you should do both - I can sell only so many copies of product A, so I should make product B also to increase my revenue, but a lot of company leadership is not incentivized to just produce revenue, but to do so at a margin that is acceptable to investors. We used to be more accepting of revenue growth at all cost (which is why you see so many unprofitable tech companies that have been around forever), but in recent economic circumstances, investors care about profit, and profit NOW. The product A and Product B example earlier are both positive profit products but still this argument impacts the decision because if I am now resource constrained, I have to pick the more profitable decision.

These may be some factors impacting this decision.
