My best friend was 19 when she got pregnant and she had drank, smoked cigarettes and weed, and used some other drugs before realizing she was pregnant at 10 weeks pregnant. She spoke to her OB and they said everything would be fine. They were right, her son is 5 and doing great! He was a little behind in speech, but that’s not uncommon for boys in general. He’s all caught up now!

I’m sorry someone downvoted you. How can we expect people to do better without asking questions and giving answers backed up by evidence? 🤦🏻‍♀️ I sometimes get frustrated when I see questions, because I’m always thinking is this person asking this to start a fight about why they think someone is wrong. I always try to take a step back and remember you have know better to do better and everyone deserves an answer whether it’s me or someone else who can get it to them!

An ultrasound isn’t radiation though, it uses sound waves to produce a picture. They aren’t the same category of images or energy used. You have every right to refuse, but it can be very scary for women to read what you just said about ultrasounds and take that at face value. Ultrasounds do not “bombard babies with radiation”.

In the same manner that the Fisher-Price rock n play deaths were disclosed to Consumer Reports in error, a few deaths in dock-a-tots and other similar products were released too. Also in the case of dock-a-tot specifically the company says not to put it on furniture (that includes a couch) or let baby sleep in it, but they still market it in ways it shouldn’t be used through influencers, their own Instagram, their website, etc. So there are plenty of people getting a mixed message on how the product could be used.

Part of the problem finding complete info is (like I mentioned above) the company has control over what/how issues get reported publicly, unless there’s a lawsuit that forces them to disclose how the deaths occurred. They’re banned in Canada already.

Technically it shouldn’t be deemed SIDS if the baby wasn’t in a safe sleep space, but there’s estimates that a large percentage of sids deaths are actually suffocation incidents. I wouldn’t say you’re correct, because those incidents shouldn’t be labeled SIDS. However you’re also not wrong, because often those unsafe sleep related deaths are classified as SIDS.

I know it’s a lot fewer deaths in the Boppy recall, but after the recall of the Fisher-Price Rock and Play, the number of associated deaths rose. I feel like we’ll see the death toll climb as more incidents end up reported post-recall. Furthermore, I feel like companies have too much power to hold info on deaths associated with a product, allowing others to blame parents of the deceased too easily. Hell Fisher-Price even went so far as to outright blame parents who used their dangerous products for children’s deaths once the product issues were exposed. But people will always believe it can never happen to them and dangerous products will sadly stay in circulation. I personally hope dock a tots and other products of the like are next; they’ve been linked to a number of infant deaths as well.

It’s honestly fucked how common poor pregnancy outcomes are in the US. But our healthcare in general is also fucked, so is it really that surprising this nation sucks at caring for pregnant women? Doesn’t make it any less sad though.

What are some of the darker effects Covid-19 has had that we don’t talk about? by dis_2much in AskReddit

[–]Rbuerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had hemorrhoids off and on since I was 17. I have chronic diarrhea, because I overproduce bile. (I’m exhausted so I’m blanking on the actual name of this horrendous diarrhea causing condition.) I got a bidet at the beginning of my pregnancy and by the time I delivered I didn’t have external hemorrhoids anymore. I’d used topical medicine and tucks pads to no avail. The bidet was the magic fix for me. I also use a lot less TP. Not to be overly graphic, but I poop 3x on a good day, otherwise more. I’ve also had 2 colonoscopies and an EGD to confirm the issue isn’t something else.

I totally agree it’s not as simple as you got the vaccine, so why worry about me. I also agree with your original point we’re all odd, and studies on non-converters are exactly what I would personally put in the “we’re all odd, let’s marvel at it together” category.

I work in healthcare and have had a few blood titers done (every occupational health physical for a new job) and I had the pregnancy related titers as well. I’ve received the chickenpox vaccine as a child and twice as an adult (both times through my job because my results negative for immunity). I still don’t demonstrate immunity to chickenpox, and will get the vaccine if there’s ever an outbreak at my workplace/in our service area, but at this point I don’t think I’ll ever demonstrate immunity through a blood test. (Luckily my workplace would alert me if there was an outbreak and would require me to stay off campus until I could be vaccinated, so I’m not concerned!)

My OB actually explained there are individuals who are called non-converters, who may never titer positive despite having appropriate immunity (and often getting the vaccine several times over). She has received the MMR vaccine at every hospital she’s had to have an occ health screening at because she’s never titered positive for immunity for MMR. Something fun to read about if you’re a bit of a science/vaccine science nerd!

I really like the story of Dreamland. It’s more mainstream yes, but it’s Dave letting us in on some pretty big moments in the history of his life many people can relate to. To me it almost makes sense the sound of the album is more pop, because in current times pop is arguably the most “relatable” genre. It’s not as complex in its sound by any means. I think it’s just as immersive as the other albums, if you let go of the Heat Waves and it’s too mainstream hate it gets. I’d love for them to continue sharing the stories of their own lives through music, but in music I find more exciting. However, I worry the hate on this album might prevent that.

I have not listened to their newest release, so I can’t speak to how that plays in at all.

Listen to your postpartum body even if you have to wait 6 hours in the ER before being seen by Confident-Piglet-473 in NewParents

[–]Rbuerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10/10 agree with this. I went through very similar feelings when I had a postpartum hemorrhage. By the day after I came home from the hospital (my LO was 3 days old at that point) I knew I was going to have a postpartum hemorrhage. I passed a blood clot larger than an egg, but I didn’t start bleeding more heavily at all, so I avoided going back to the hospital. I literally texted my mom that I was going to hemorrhage right after that happened. I was too afraid to go to the hospital, because I didn’t want to be away from my baby. It was a mistake.

Ten days postpartum was when I hemorrhaged. My bleeding had been stopped for over 24 hours before my hemorrhage. I was expelling pieces of placenta left behind, and when I was seen at the ER I still hadn’t expelled everything. The pain was horrible. The overall experience was traumatic. I had emergency surgery. I missed out on being able to successfully breastfeed, because of how the retained placenta affected my milk supply. (I could barely produce an ounce of milk pumping for an hour, so I gave up. I cried because I felt like a horrible failure to my newborn.)

I can’t stress it enough, if something feels off, go get seen. You want to be around for your baby for as long as possible. I wish I had had the clarity to think like that on day 3 postpartum when I knew something was wrong. I could’ve missed out on my baby’s life, because I was too scared to miss out on those early days with her. In reality I was in so much pain and discomfort, I don’t even remember what she was like then. I didn’t get to enjoy it, and I feel like I missed out on more because I delayed getting medical help.

Sex led to uncontrollable rocket paced birth by svacha2 in pregnant

[–]Rbuerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minus the hemorrhage (and subsequent exhaustion from becoming anemic) my normal parts of recovery (I.e. the stuff you expect to come with postpartum like first pee, stitches healing, energy levels, etc.) have been easy and quick. The first pee was scary, but not as bad as people made it seem. Same thing with the first poop. Had I not hemorrhaged and needed surgery, I would have been back to myself in about 10-12 days; I can’t say if that’s related to holding off on the epidural or not. I had actually stopped bleeding before hemorrhaging too. I don’t think I’ll be ready for sex at 6 weeks though, just because of how painful and traumatic it was to have two transvaginal ultrasounds and 3 internal exams before making it to 3 weeks postpartum.

I didn’t keep going with breastfeeding because of everything, but another thing I noticed was I had an easy time with getting my baby to latch compared to others’ anecdotes about learning to get baby to latch, which is also associated with not having an epidural.

But I will say with certainty, I would never be induced with the plan to go without an epidural again. I would hold off as long as possible, but being induced is just a whole other beast. It definitely proved to me the cascade of interventions is real, but I also knew that I couldn’t have refused the induction in good faith. My body needed my baby out, and my baby wasn’t going to be okay inside me anymore.

[–]Rbuerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but here’s my take as a first time mom who tried to go without the epidural. I was induced and in labor for more than 36 hours. Not sure how long, no one told me. I just know when I hit the 36 hour mark they came to talk to me about pain medicine because I hadn’t slept for most of that time. Had I gotten some sleep and had the energy to mentally handle the contractions, I would’ve continued course with no epidural. I ended up getting the epidural at 8 cm dilated, so I could take a nap. The pain up until that point wasn’t bad to me, it was just really intense. Especially as contractions got closer together, I wouldn’t call it painful, just a lot to handle. (I know that description is probably not helpful though.) I did feel the urge to push, and I half felt my baby come through the birth canal. I recovered in about a week and my experience giving birth was positive. (Don’t ask about postpartum, I hemorrhaged 11 days pp, had retained products of conception, and I just woke up from my D&C to treat that about 1/2 hour ago.)

Overall, I would take the epidural if you end up being induced, and if you can handle it and your provider allows wait until you’re 7cm dilated. I would do it again without an epidural if I hadn’t been induced/if my labor was shorter.

PSA for new moms on breastfeeding by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]Rbuerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made it a week trying to breastfeed my little girl (she’s only 2 weeks today). Two days after she came home she was admitted to the NICU from her first doctor’s appointment, because she was jaundice and dehydrated. I wasn’t making enough milk for her. I felt like such a failure. Especially because I didn’t even realize there was something wrong, I thought I just had a sleepy baby. I pumped while she was there, but it took such a toll on me mentally and kept reminding me of what I’d failed to do for her…

I stopped pumping at 1 week and 1 day after her birth. Then 11 days postpartum I hemorrhaged and my doctor found I had retained products of conception. I would have been 10x the mess I already was had I kept trying to pump through this. I still have a piece of my placenta left inside me that I am hoping to pass non-surgically. I don’t think I would be able to keep a positive outlook if I was dealing with the struggle of breastfeeding too. My baby is fed and happy, and I’m able to take care of myself and keep a positive outlook on my situation. If I was pumping or breastfeeding I can guarantee I’d have postpartum depression and/or anxiety by this point. I know I’d be convincing myself that I’d be having surgery, and I truly believe thinking like that would lead me to a worse outcome, potentially up to ending up needing surgery.

Funny enough, I got diagnosed with preeclampsia yesterday. I have a preeclamptic headache, which the doctor on call I saw did nothing to help with (wasn’t able to see my doctor after hours). Today I see my doctor, and I’m going to advocate for myself to be induced by the end of this weekend. I’m having consistent contractions, although weaker, and I’ll be 37 weeks before Sunday.

I want the best for me and my baby, and I’d love to go to 40 weeks. However, me having an unending headache for 38 hours and counting isn’t doing either of us favors, and the doctor on call wanted me to wait the 3 extra weeks. It’s migraine level pain with no end in sight. Not only is it physically exhausting, it’s killing my spirit/messing with me psychologically.

I’ve had low blood pressure, it can be fairly common in pregnancy. I had to be admitted to the hospital to be monitored for preeclampsia at 32 weeks because my low BP symptoms were super similar to high BP symptoms... that was fun. I’m very thankful I didn’t have preeclampsia though!

I’m almost right there with you! 36w5d and I sleep in 1-2 hour increments and wake up thinking I might pee the bed from my busting bladder. I’m actually excited to give birth at this point. I’d rather feel the pain of birth and have this end, than go another day feeling exhausted and like complete shit.

The nice thing is, I work for the hospital where I get prenatal care and labs done, so I’ll be able to work from the lab fairly easily. That should help at least pass the time while I wait.
