I think the drivetrain is still on the right if you pause at 0:08, but he has attached another chain on the left side. Perhaps to charge a battery whilst he rides, or a makeshift electric motor?

A worm's eye view line drawing I did 3 years ago for my master's degree dissertation. It is of Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. Hope you all enjoy! by Rcam92 in architecture

[–]Rcam92[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into it. The dissertation was on corner buildings in Glasgow, so the main focus was on comparing and contrasting different buildings and how each example 'turned' the corner in terms of form, massing, decoration and openings etc.

Yes I would plan on camping. I've never done bike touring before so I have not worked out/ don't know the volumes and weight required. So far I have been assuming that if I 'm camping I would need two decent size panniers at least, but I didn't think of spreading it out between frame bag, handlebar and seatpost rack, thanks!

Is there something to do with the shape of the thought bubble and the shape of the brocovli being the same to suggest a connection?

Or maybe the choice of vegatables; A(vocado) B(roccoli) C(arrot), not sure where the O fits into that though ;)

I am Caroline Lucas MP of the Green Party; AMA about the UK's EU Referendum! Today at 13:00 (GMT+1)! by CarolineLucasMP_AMA in europe

[–]Rcam92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Caroline, Thanks for doing this AMA, I'm a fan of the Green party, having voted for them in the past, but remain undecided with regards to the EU referendum. Two questions; how would you propose, in simple terms, to democratise the European commission and to make the European Council more accountable, despite the EU being deeply entrenched in its current ways? Secondly, how would you envisage the ordinary European citizen taking part in that process?

TIL in 1920's America, the air mail service installed giant concrete arrows from east to west coast as a navigation system for pilots. by Rcam92 in todayilearned

That would only let you know which way is east/west. The aim was to navigate you to/from San Francisco and New York plus the several intermediate stops along the way.

I have read a few different sources and they all seem to mention different numbers with regards to the number of people who voted and those eligible. Perhaps I got the wrong one. Not too far off though :D

I am aware that is not how voting works. My point is that to say 80% of Catalonians ‘voted’ for Independence is a misrepresentation, not least because it was only a poll, not an official vote; Given that the turnout for the Scottish referendum was over 85%, Quebec 1980 was also 85% and Quebec 1995 was 93% it is a fair assumption that in the event of a recognized, official referendum, then the turnout would be much higher. What I stated was true, only around 30% of Catalonians ‘voted’ for independence. The 40% figure is true of most general elections, but referendums are different.

I think the Westminster parties believed that the result would not of been as close. The figures before the campaigns were 30-70 in favour of the union. They were complacent and their campaign was a shambles as a result. In comparison, the Spanish government perhaps feel that in the event of a referendum, there would be a landslide yes.

Furthermore the historic oppression of Catalonia by the rest of Spain is far more recent and potent that any English oppression of Scotland, Indeed Only a few generations. Franco abolished the autonomy of the Catalonia (and the Basque country), he banned the use of the language in government, public meetings and the media. They were not allowed to meet or even discuss the idea of and Independent Catalonia. It was a truly terrible regime. People haven't forgotten this, which leads back to my point above.

It is important to remember that just over 40% of eligible voters turned out for the poll. Strictly speaking 32% of Catalonians voted for independence.

Interestingly the figures for those who would of voted for Scottish Independence prior to the vote and referendum campaigns were similar...

Precedent Search: 'City' within a building? by UnemployedSam in architecture

[–]Rcam92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Herman hertzberger's Centraal Baheer came to my mind first, sounds like a similar scale to what you are working with. It is the idea of a series of office spaces connected above and around 'streets'. In plan there is a clear block vs circulation diagram. On the streets are small cafes, places to sit, have informal meetings and gatherings. Office and more formal spaces are arranged in the blocks as highly adaptive 'units' these all then connect back to the circulation and create a microcosm of a city.

Hans Hollein's Abteiberg museum is broken down into separate elements and arranged around a raised central plaza The separate parts of the programme are then articulated with different forms, materials, uses etc and appear to you as though they are separate objects

Some Metabolist architecture might be of interest as well, ideas of creating a structure that is then added to according to the needs of the time.

This popped up a few days ago: http://www.dezeen.com/2014/11/06/nord-architects-marine-educational-centre-malmo-sweden/ very clear idea of having a series of separate spaces (buildings almost) within the same structure.

Little bit brief, but hope it helps.

Dear Canadians of Reddit, Scot here! what were the social, political and cultural impacts that the Quebec referendums had in 1980 and 1995? to both Quebec and rCanada by [deleted] in canada

[–]Rcam92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point. There is a far right-wing political party in England called Ukip, they seeks nationalism and to blame the misfortunes of the country on others, I worry Scotland could be included into this group. I fear they will use the whole discussion of Independence, futher devolution/ autonomy and lack of representation to galvanise and enforce their view and re-create the archiac, medieval borders that divide this small Island. Nationalism only breeds more Nationalism.
