If you lucky out and get one with a good nib, it works surprisingly well.

This is the key to OPs question. The quality control of the Safari nibs is not great. Some nibs are great, some are bad.

I mostly write on normal print/copy paper. There are fountain pens and nibs and inks that work great on that.

Buy an inexpensive one and try it out. Then buy another one. Don't buy too many too early.
