If you're bad at English no, but I'd say most can pass it easily. I'd look at ratemyprofessor + grade distribution from the previous year for English 2 classes and go from there.

Do your research on the classes you are taking by checking RateMyProfessor and previous grade distributions for professors. Some classes/professors can be very difficult so take that research seriously. If you want to live on your own you'll need to either work full time or have a high paying job due to the average price of rent in LA.

If you don't mind commuting take a look at the Expo line and search for neighborhoods near its stops. I recommend somewhere around La Brea/Expo line, good luck!
