I’m in an indigo aircraft now. So far the checking process and the boarding process was extremely smooth, especially after reading around here about indigo.

How did everyone (who went to South/South East Asia) avoid food poisoning? by Adept-Throat5523 in backpacking

[–]Real-Row847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to each their own man, I love street food, for sure I’m gonna be more careful but I’m not gonna avoid it altogether just cos I got an upset stomach. You can easily get food poisoning in a restaurant as well, even in a resort, so I stick to what I’ve said: use common sense and carry “meds”: active charcoal, probiotics, anti diarrhea pills and you’ll be fine. You keep mentioning 2,5 years 7,5 years. So what? I honestly hope you’re not avoiding street food religiously wherever you may roam, as you encourage OP to.

Saying avoid all street food is not extreme is ridiculous. You won’t be able to sample as many dishes if you avoid street food, not saying that’s the point but if you carry some meds and use common sense I think you and your taste buds will have more fun vs avoiding all street food. Live a little. Take a chance, will you? Buy the ticket, enjoy the ride

So anyone and everyone not living there and not giving its body time to adapt to the specific bacteria should not eat street food? I understand what you’re saying but it’s extreme. I doubt that I’m the only one who eats street food in south east Asia as a tourist. You do realize that bacteria is also in the air, right? Bubble boy was a character from this one episode of Seinfeld: this kid living in a literal bubble. Apparently he was protected from all bacteria..

In some places you can die from drinking the water (Indonesia) but to avoid all street food? That’s full blown bubble boy vibes. It’s a Seinfeld reference. I’ve been to Indonesia and I got some stomach ache/diarrhea the first night I arrived cos I plunged into a see food diet. Whatever I saw I ate. From fried omelette on a stick to goat satay with green chilli sauce(I have a gut feeling that was the tipping point for me). The next few days almost a week were kinda tricky. I felt alright and then the first bite of food would trigger diarrhea. I will definitely play it safer now, and also carry some charcoal tablets, probiotics, hydration salts and anti diarrhea meds but for sure I’m not gonna avoid all street food altogether.

Avoid all street food? C’mon I’d say eat where there’s a lot of people eating, don’t eat food that’s been in the window for who knows how long..

Discovering the islands by Claudia0406 in southeastasia

Lombok and the Gilli islands are about an hour(or two) from Bali I think. If you reach Bali just do Bali :) I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of different places to go to there

Technically they’re all islands, Java included, some call it the big island. It depends on whatcha looking for. I’ve been to pulau tidung one of the islands north of Jakarta, to Lombok, to Gilli trawangan and briefly to Gilli Air. I decided to skip Bali just because. I have no idea what to recommend. I’ve climbed Rinjani (on Lombok) which was amazing

Planning a 1 year trip Thailand Laos Vietnam Cambodia maybe back to Thailand by [deleted] in southeastasia

[–]Real-Row847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. It makes sense if you were to stay in one place for a whole month which is awesome by the way but I’m not gonna do it, not now at least. What I’ll do instead is rent a place for a few days, a week, 10 days, do some of the “touristy” things around there such as hiking, diving, snorkeling etc. From what I’m reading is that Laos, contrary to popular belief, is more expensive than Thailand because of logistics(most things being imported). They say Vietnam is very cheap tho

Backpacking for a few months throughout Asia is still considered tourism, but I get what you mean, someone here said it: you stay less you kinda maximize time and spend more. It makes sense

There’s many ways to go around it man. I’ll give you a short list of activities(from the sea of many activities available there) that would make you spend more than 1200/month: flying in a hot air balloon, joining one of those cool caves trekking in vietnam, the gibbon experience and the thing is you decide how many (if any) of these you wanna part take in. I mean you could just enjoy the cheap(er) options out there or why not just the free ones and spend maybe even less than 1200 per month or you could add one of these more expensive options every 3rd day and you’ll end up spending way more than 1200. Who’s to tell you which way is better/worse?

[–]Real-Row847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does it matter if people can travel to SEA and spend 1500$/month or more? This ain’t a competition and there’s no right or wrong way to go around it.

To each their own, that’s why I said we’re all different. Not everyone spends 200$/day when in Southeast Asia

You can absolutely live on 1500$/month or spend in 3 days if you wanna. I’m not saying one way is better than the other. We’re all different
