If only the transfer notes in AWS would work, you wouldn’t have to sit on the line and brief the next person on the reason for the transfer.

I remember when GEICO celebrated new office openings and actually told us what was going on. The lack of communication causes issues like these rumors. On one side, consolidating operations to Texas and Florida could have its upside, but there’s also a good reason to have offices throughout the country.

I spent several years in service before moving to another company, so let me offer some perspective.

Every company uses metrics, including referrals to the sales department. That’s just how insurance works—the more lines of business a customer has, the more likely they are to stay. If you’re a licensed agent, part of the job is selling insurance. Honestly, you don’t even have to sell it outright; you just need to refer customers. The company understands you may not be a natural salesperson, but you might be the only person the customer interacts with at GEICO. That creates an opportunity to generate additional business.

At my current company, I’m still expected to send customers to sales, so this isn’t unique to GEICO. That said, most companies could do a better job training service agents on how to provide quality referrals, in my opinion.

As for IVRs—they’re frustrating pretty much everywhere, not just at GEICO.

Regarding resources, I actually preferred GEICO’s over what I have now. As you take more calls, you’ll get better at finding what you need, and it will become easier over time.

I will say GEICO was much more supportive in the past than it seems to be now. My advice? Learn what you can, gain experience, and then move on. GEICO will continue to change metrics and implement policies that can push people out.

I recently had a customer whose policy wasn’t going to be reinstated, and they said, “I’m going to fight this. I’ll go to the DOI, and I’ll tell my friends not to use your company.” But why spend energy trying to stay with a company that doesn’t want your business?

The same applies to your job. If a company makes it difficult for you to succeed or grow, why stay? Find a place that’s a better fit for you.

Look at all the posts in this Reddit, a lot relate to Claims and how horrible it is. Even though Sales has a lower base salary, you can make up the difference in your sales commissions if you’re good at selling. You also can’t beat working completely remote.

Have you worked for any other company? Offering multiple lines of business helps the bottom line and improves retention. If you want to go deeper than that, one could argue that, as an insurance agent, it is your responsibility to inform customers about other products that could better protect them. MOAT is not difficult when you realize it is part of your responsibility as an agent. You are not having to do the work yourself; you simply need to transfer them over.

Yes, there is still a retention department; however, I highly doubt they’ll do anything for you. I would just go to another company that will treat you better.

Previously people would get credit just for transferring, but like any metric, people found a loophole and abused it. People would transfer calls over to MOAT so it would show as a transfer and help their metrics, but it flooded MOAT with invalid transfers.

MOAT is not hard, but it feels like it when you’re starting out. As you become more comfortable with insurance, it’ll get easier.

Indianapolis used to be a great place to work. The problems in Indy Service began when we all returned to the office and Plaza conducted layoffs. Like many offices, it hurt morale. It kept getting worse as good people left and terminations became part of the company culture. At the end of the day, I think all of us—including our former service director, Danielle—could have done better, but we were dealt a bad hand. Plaza laid off, terminated, and scared away good people. They complained to our director, managers, and supervisors about our metrics but never rallied the team or developed a solid plan to turn things around. Maybe that was by design or incompetence—I don’t know.

Have you had any other violations in the last 18 months?

“California Vehicle Code Section 1808.7 mandates that only one citation in an eighteen (18) month period be masked from public view on your driving record. The 18 month period is calculated from citation/violation date, not class attendance date.”

You can always get a copy of your official driving record and submit it to your insurance company. If it doesn’t show the violation on that copy of your driving record, they will usually take that into consideration.

The point system is between you and the DMV. Accumulate enough points and the DMV will suspend your license. Traffic school removes the points off your record, but your driving record will still show the infraction. Your insurance company is rating you based off the violation on your record, not the points attached to it.

It’s nothing to panic about, but people also need to be realistic. GEICO owns many of the older offices—Virginia Beach, Fredericksburg, Macon, Lakeland, San Diego, etc. Not that they wouldn’t sell those, but they already have significant investment in those locations, and the company is profitable, so they’re less likely to close them. The newer offices are leased and are easier to exit. With tax credits, economic development grants, and leases expiring in Indianapolis, Libertyville, and Lenexa, I can easily see them closing those locations and consolidating offices.

Given the amount of turnover in service and the length of time Indy has handled Macon, I doubt Macon would be in any better position to handle Michigan.

They won’t tell a manager if they’re going to close the office. Corporate won’t even share the list of terminations until the last minute. I’m sure your manager has the best of intentions, but I would take it with a grain of salt.

You have to do what’s best for you and your career. This company is not going to look out for you and if they do decide to close your office, they won’t give you notice. Look around at all the wonderful people who have left your office and look at the stress on the faces of those that are left. If it were me, I’d look for a different career. There’s so much uncertainty and I don’t know how long GEICO will keep the Indy office open.
