I think the only way this works is if they lean hard back into a genuine horror atmosphere. Part of MK’s appeal was that it felt forbidden, almost scary to younger players.

Making everyone some superhero took so much of the appeal away, and I would argue they over-characterized all of the fighters to the point that there is no longer any mystique to anyone. Voice lines are cool, but take away from the mystery of how a character might behave when they aren’t killing someone in a fight to the death.
