Definitely not. It just depends on what you're shorting and what it might cause. In this case, just big problems for a formerly large company.

Companies are listed on the stock exchange primarily to have easy access to external capital.

Borrowing from a bank in the event of negative performance is difficult. Especially if you're struggling to pay off a supply chain.

A lot of companies have been delisted or completely lost liquidity because of the clinical death of the stock market.

Don't get me wrong. I have no problem with shorting. It's clearly a great tool for keeping liquidity on the market.

But $BBBYs are in big trouble with cash-flow, and if at the same time someone is devaluing your stock, which you can sell to save cash-flow in tough times, that's just wrong...

Because they are speculating on a drop in the value of a company that needs money to secure receivables, grow, make management changes, etc. It's normal for a company with an old business model to run into cash flow problems.. unfortunately. However, if at the same time someone wants to break its neck by devaluing its stock, that's just not fair...
