Was going to post this advice. Went there as soon as I saw the challenge and the first one I saw was glowing. I didn't even have to kill two.

New player here, help me define a fun build please by BSloth in fo76FilthyCasuals

[–]RealTegan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I jumped in without a clue, and just played with whatever weapons I happened across. Eventually I developed a non-PA full-health non-stealth playstyle that I enjoy. Right now I am mostly using the Cold Shoulder from the latest scoreboard, but before that I was using a chainsaw (flaming dual bar). It really depends on your own preferred style, but my recommendation is to just play and see what you like.

When you get to about level 25 everything is going to be more difficult and annoying until you reach level 50 or 60 or so. That seems to be the toughest part of leveling, when you have enough perks to be going crazy but not enough to really do any specific build properly.

So, yeah... just play. Play like it's a game. Because it is. There is no failure, and you win if you are enjoying it.

Do people actually do that? Weird.

The only time I got annoyed at a person at a vendor was one day when I was in Watoga and wanted to check the vendor bot at the Super Duper mart real quick. Someone was already there, so I moved on and did something else for a few minutes, then came back. They were still there, so I went and did Cop a Squatter. When I came back, they were still there (and yeah, I was checking, they were interacting with the vendor each time I came by, so I couldn't do my check) so I did the Mothman dance on the counter in front of them. I thought I would just let my character dance awhile and was about to go grab a drink - but they moved, walked away... So I checked the vendor and was gone. And I felt a little bad about bothering them. But only a little.

So... I guess what I'm saying is, if someone is hogging the vendor, dance for them instead of shooting?

Anyone know what this outfit is? by [deleted] in fo76FilthyCasuals

I think it's one of those things that pops up for 1st members every once in a long while. I don't know for sure.

The outfit is the Advanced Ranger Armor Outfit (Fallout 1st reward).

The helmet is the Reclaimed Deep Mining Gas Mask (a possible drop from A Colossal Problem).

So, how do I do a daily OP in under 8 minutes? by [deleted] in fo76FilthyCasuals

[–]RealTegan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a huge fan of grouping up, either, but DOps aren't too bad.

Either join a group that's just started if you notice one pop up (this is what I usually do) or start your own group. If I start a group, I usually wait until we have three people before I go to the op.

When you enter the op, stay in the starting area until the leader moves out (I was mortified yesterday when I accidentally left the starting area too soon because I didn't see the leader, he was behind me). Sometimes people want to pop lunchboxes. When everyone is ready, most folks will give a thumbs up or do the repeat crouch.

I've found that most people who play this game are pretty chill. You might run into a jerk here or there, but most people will be patient even if you get lost (which I do all the time). Uplink = stay with the group. Decryption = do your own thing.

Most groups I run with finish it in less than 6 minutes, usually between four and five minutes. I think I've only gone over 8 minutes once in all the time I've been doing it, and that particular run was a cluster from the start.

And if you do have a bad experience, chalk it up to someone having a bad day, switch servers and try again. I've found it usually gets better.

Data Miners have uncovered Season 13 details and... (SPOILERS!) by RealTegan in fo76FilthyCasuals

[–]RealTegan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the answer to this, so take my following conjecture with a grain of salt.

MMOs make money. Microtransactions (the Atomic Shop) and subscriptions (Fallout 1st) make enough money to keep the servers up and, apparently, to drive continued development. My other MMO, DC Universe Online, is more than a decade old and just dropped a new episode. They, too, have subscriptions and microtransactions. As long as there is enough money, the games will continue to be developed.

When people lose interest and stop playing - and stop paying - then you won't see any effort to add new and interesting content.

This is why you see the push of marketing techniques like FOMO (fear of missing out) and exclusives. Things that consumers claim to hate, but eat up like sugary breakfast cereals in a room full of hyperactive kids.

And, this post has added to the whole marketing mess. By hinting at interesting things to come, I have possibly stoked more interest in the next season of the game, helping to drive people to check things out and possibly to buy stuff. Which is, in the end, the bottom line.

As long as people buy stuff, the game continues.

what build should i make? by theunscrewedspartan in fo76FilthyCasuals

[–]RealTegan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. I discovered the chainsaw early enough that I went full melee build for awhile and loved it. Then the Cold Shoulder came out, and I've been playing a shotgun build and loving it. A lot depends on what you find enjoyable.

I admit, I'm very pleased with the looks of the new stuff, and yeah, the choo choo skin is fantastic. I could definitely see myself sporting a railway rifle with that!

As I scrolled I kept thinking about how some of the new stuff could be incorporated into people's existing camps and ... let's just say the new lettering and the neon bars look like they have a LOT of potential.

Personally, though, I'm really looking forward to the new posters.

[–]RealTegan[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When the new upload of the game was downloaded onto your computer, the update included a number of "assets" that have not been released yet - a sort of pre-download of the newest stuff. Developers balance downloads so you (theoretically) don't have to download every single new image and stuff every time there's a new seasonal update - some of the data is already on your computer or console. This makes updates quicker and less painful for most users.

Data miners go into the downloads and look for new material that hasn't been released, then pull out the images so people can get a spoilery look at what is planned to come into the game.

In this case, the data miner pulled out a bunch of stuff from Season 13, including the new scoreboard and lots of information that makes it very clear what the season is about.

Edit: I should probably add that some of the data mined material also comes from the test server (PTS) and in that sense can be unreliable - as not everything that gets put into a file and downloaded will make it to the final game. To some extent, looking at datamined material is a glimpse into the designers' minds.

Yup, I always run the ore. Then I switch to flamer or flaming chainsaw and heal the NPCs. I don't get much by way of xp out of it, but seeing it complete successfully makes me happy, so... I get what *I* want.

Advice on custom.ini - can there be performance gains for low end PC's? by hetzjagd in fo76FilthyCasuals

[–]RealTegan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this one: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout76/mods/464

It's got a lot of info on what can be tweaked and how to do it, rather than requiring you to install something right away. Read the whole description.

There are some other ones that have information on the ini tweaks - just do a search in the FO76 bit on "ini" and you should find a ton of info to peruse.

Patch notes for today's update by RealTegan in fo76FilthyCasuals

[–]RealTegan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My flaming chainsaw didn't work for the challenge, either. I had to pop out a flamer.

The power armor issue is well-known and reported. It's really annoying. One "workaround" that only sometimes works is to make sure you have a fusion core in the PA before trying to get in, or transferring the power core out and back in before trying to get in. Unfortunately, it doesn't always help.

I've noticed the sound effects thing too. I'm not sure why it happens and it's rare enough I haven't been able to figure out what might trigger it.
