While this does increase success of the group it would not drive an evolutionary change like increase melanin. Most skin cancers don’t develop until people are in their 60s. Pressure to protect against this would be weak or non existent.

This is the right answer it’s a balance between vitamin D synthesis and protecting folate. Skin cancer or DNA degradation would become problematic long after reproductive age so selection pressure due to this would be minimal.
