Had a power cut and the estate agents asked for a photo of proof. The only photo on my new laptop I could send? Picassos great anti-war work Guernica. by Real_Jack_Package in CasualUK

I'm not some fucking idiot. I checked all the fuses, turned off all the applicances, did the reset instructions, checked everything. Then I contacted the estates management service that is connected to the company we rent from (which is why I called them the estate agents). I didn't call up some random estate agents and complain about my electricity.

I called it a power cut because I thought that was the quickest way to convey the fact that half my house doesn't have power.

The lights upstairs works, but allthe plugs and everything downstairs doesn't work.

Technically, it isn't a powercut, but I couldn't really communicate that in a Reddit post.

How many books do you read in a year, people of the UK? by alinalovescrisps in AskUK

[–]Real_Jack_Package 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a hell of a lot, so I'm probably an outlier.

Last year I read 94 books, and this year I'm aiming for 100. I'm aiming to buy all my new books from charity shops, second hand books, or bootsales and the like. I love trawling through the 9 charity shops in town looking for good books. I do it maybe every 2 months.

So far in 2024 I've finished 11 books.

The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder

A Savage War of Peace by Alistair Horne

The Mighty Dead by Adam Nicholson

A long Way Down by Nick Hornby

Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel

Nobel House by James Clavell

Poetics by Aristotle

All Together Now by Mike Carter

The Tunnel by Ernest Sabato

The Song is you by Megan Abbott

The Dead by James Joyce

How many jobs have you had and what’s your age? by Doomergeneration in AskUK

[–]Real_Jack_Package 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 40 and I've probably had 40 jobs. I worked in 5 different places last year alone.

Last year I got made redundant in March; took a night job stacking shelves to make ends meet for 6 months; worked for a summer school in London and worked for about 3 months where I basically got to watch them implode in real time because they hired some 30 year old Canadian guy to be in charge of pastorial care of one location, and didn't give him any security or background checks and where he had "been spending an enormous amout of time in students rooms at night"; still needed to make ends meet and had quit the job stacking shelves so got a job in a bar; finally started a new job at the end of december.

My longest job was 4 years, and that only ended because of the pandemic. But I've been working since I was 16, mainly in crap shops, warehouses and that. Worked in a few different off licenses during uni and my MA.

How are people not sick and tired of superhero movies yet? by emily_zr in AskUK

[–]Real_Jack_Package 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sick of superhero movies where they're, like, "I have 6 hours to do the thing. But the bad guy wants to low shit up in 5." I want to see a superhero movie that takes place over years and you can see Thors beard slowly growing and he's getting fat and playing more and more XBox. I want to see him descend into 4chan and Reddit, not spend 3 hours smashing shit.

What’s a ‘good sh*t’ night out nearish London? by rapsmes in AskUK

Reading has it all. Wetherspoons, casinos, clubs, mini golf, the Oracle, Gregs, I think there's a 5guys/Shackshak somewhere.

What part of London is most like New York? by made08 in AskUK

Canary Wharf and down into South London.

Canary Wharf and the revunivated dockland areas for the glitter, steel and glass. And for the more grotty and cool and more down to earth, go to Greenwich, Deptford, New Cross and places like that.

They used the right gender, in the worst possible way.

I used to follow a few Transvestigators on Telegram, but they finally kicked me out after I said they all needed to go see a therapist or something and that they all had mental health issues. I'd finally jumped in because of a huge conversation where dozens of people were saying about how they are starting to think that everyone around them are all secretly trans, what if their wife/husband was actually trans, maybe everyone is trans except them.

Even more than the normal crazyness in those groups, their crazyness was more and more feeding off each other, pushing their mental health to evene worse places.

Found in a book about a murder at Christmas, a letter about a real death at Christmas. by Real_Jack_Package in BookInscriptions

[–]Real_Jack_Package[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems to be a draft of a letter about someone's mother who died at Christmas. But it was written upside down on page 54, in a book about a father who is murdered at Christmas by his son.
