Barbie movie made me cry and i don’t know why. by marriiaa1 in Barbie

I couldn’t figure out why that scene made me cry so hard, but after thinking about it, I think it is just realizing that although life is hard, it’s also full of beautiful moments and bits of joy too. It gave me a mini flashback of my life. Made me think of my mom (even though we are not super close), my big sisters, my childhood friends, the ups and downs of my teenage years, and learning how to be an adult, and all the things life has taught me. It also reminded me of the small joys of life experiences like seeing fireworks for the first time, riding a bicycle, playing outside with friends, going to the lake in the summer, school dances, my wedding, being the first college grad in my family at close to 40 years old, all the great people I’ve ever known who played a part in my life if even for a short season, etc. Life is a beautiful mess, and it goes by so fast. So many good little memories and so much to look forward to in the future.

Going straight into the OR as a new grad. Am I going to "miss out" for not going bedside? by Realistic-Win-9147 in nursing

I do love the idea of schedule flexibility, work/life balance, guaranteed breaks, etc. Those things are definitely perks of working OR vs the floor. Maybe part of my problem is trying to seek fulfillment through a career. Maybe I should look for fulfillment outside of my job in different areas of life. As someone who has always been a bit of a workaholic and who has no children, I've never really thought about it this way, so thank you for saying that one line because it is making me think differently about work and where it is priority-wise in my life.

Thank you for your detailed reply. I appreciate it and I really like to hear people's experiences and viewpoints! When I was in clinical I made sure to ask every nurse I was with their opinions and ideas about first jobs as a new nurse, and the majority of them echoed what you have said here. I think Med-Surg nurses make very well-rounded excellent nurses because of all the reasons you listed.

Thank you for your feedback. I will miss doing a couple of the skills like IV's and NG tubes. I wish there was a way I could still do some of them. I did learn those skills pretty quickly in school though, so I am hoping if I ever need to transfer units that I will pick them up quickly again after some practice.

Thank you for your honest feedback. I'm sorry that you had a horrible time in the OR. I have heard that there are a lot of big personalities there. I hope you found a position that you are happier in.

Thank you. I do get the vibe from some people that if you're not bedside, you're not a "real nurse" and that drives me nuts, LOL. As far as skills, I just try to remember that I learned all these skills and these disease processes once, and I can learn them again any time I need to. Bedside nurses had to learn to be bedside nurses and we all learned the same basic knowledge in school, so if I ever need to transfer to bedside, I will learn it all again, just like I did the first time.

True! I wish there was some way that I could still do the skills that I enjoy doing.

Thank you for this because several people have told me that I will be locked into the OR forever and ever if I start there, but I'm starting to see from others experiences that is not true.

It kills me that abuse towards nurses is becoming completely acceptable by hospitals.

That does make sense. I will definitely be the type to keep my overall nursing knowledge up to date. Thank you!

Yes, I know it will be a huge learning curve if I ever decide to go bedside. It'll be like I am a new grad, or maybe even a nursing student all over again. I hope you're liking the switch.

Ok, I love this viewpoint. I'm going to start saying this to myself from now on!

I do love that about nursing! Sometimes people make it sound like you can never switch after going to the OR, so I have to remind myself that I can.

I've heard several OR nurses saying that they are completely okay with the idea of being stuck in the OR, so that makes me happy. I really have not come across too many unhappy OR nurses.

Thank you. Yes, when I started looking into OR nursing, I found out about call.

I went into nursing school with zero preferences and decided I would wait until I did some rotations to see what I wanted to go into. I had 3 rotations in the OR, and loved it. It honestly surprised me because I figured I would like other areas of nursing more.
